Kaos
05-23-2002, 03:46 PM
well, i have to agree the background is amazing, it took me 4weeks to get it right.............. hehehe.....

anyway, i decided to take the plunge and see if i could still draw, its been a while....

anyway, i made a concept for my scene..... i have a feeling my machine is going to fall over when i try and render it.. so i am probably going to model up everything and render it in layers for compositing in photoshop....

anyway, waddaya think of my little concept??

ok, i'm gonna give it another shot.... hopefully i can find some time this weekend to work on this...

well, here is the basic foreground of the scene... its empty, i know... but i do plan on having a main tree in the centre area, with shrooms, flowers and grass turned up to OVERKILL with nice vibrant colours...... i am thinking maybe a tiny house or villiage in there too.... not too sure yet.......

I like the look of that last pic. Those are some great looking rocks you made. As far as the grass it looks like you are using a scaled cylinder shape. I'd rocomend using a planar model instead. Like either a poly plane or nurbs plane. So far so good!

Kaos
06-08-2002, 05:03 PM
Zr0-1 , thanx.... i would generally use planes for the grass, but not in this kind of scene, i am trying for something a bit softer, rounder even, you know, a nice colourful soft image that you might find in a children's book or something..... so i am gonna keep that grass..... but thanx for the opinion......

It's got some good elements so far. Everything, especially that shroom seems very large compared to the tree stump, that's kinda odd and out of place. I don't like that texture on the tree stump much, the green doesn't fit and isn't natural.

Ok firstly, you need to get rid of that blue background. It hurts my eyes  Even if you do a quick render of soome trees and foliage, just put something green and foresty back there! :)

I see you are going for a cute, cartoonish look. It's looking cool so far! I like the mushrooms and the leaves particularly :) Although, model-wise, you should make your leaves a bit thinner - they are so thick right now, that I doubt those thin stems could hold them up!
Those rocks in the foreground kinda compete with that big mushroom. You should try making them a bit greyer like the ones by the stump. They also seem a bit too shiny.

The little red mushrooms look very cool, but I think it would be even cooler if one of them looked a bit different to the others - by which I mean, that maybe an animal has eaten part of it, or maybe part of it has rotted or something. This is a wild forest, remember? So those kinds of unique details here and there make it more interesting.

The grass is great, but try having a little bit more variation in the length. Make some of the blades much shorter, and add a few longer ones here and there. Also, logically, if you look at the ground, there seems to be no logical reason why the grass isn't growing all over it. Try varying the actual ground texture so that it appears darker, richer and moister in the areas where the grass is grwoing - which would explain why it is only growing in those patches. I know that sounds a bit strange, but it would make more sense.

I think your little flowers are looking nice, but once again, the same as with the little mushrooms - add some variations here and there. Flowers almost always have one or two petals a bit munched by insects. Even have a petal missing somewhere. Even though your overall look is meant to be cartoonish, look at Shrek - that was cartoonish, but it also looked kinda real because of it's attention to detail. So I think these sort of small details are important.

You asked me about unwrapping techniques for the tree stump. Uuuurrrghhhh!!! Trees are a real pain in the arse because their shapes are just so irregular - what with all those bloody branches sticking out everywhere - they are a seam nightmare  I think for your stump, the best method would be to unwrap the main part cylindrically on the y-axis, and each little stump also cylindrically, but obviously on the x-axis.
Obviously, this is going to be a tricky one when it comes to avoiding seams, but with a bit of trial and error, it'll come right eventually. I find the best way to avoid horrible seams is to not have unique detail along the edges, rather just stick to something neutral, so that they blend together properly.

Unwraps aside, the texture on the stump really isn't working yet. It just doesn't look like bark :surprised. Also the moss on it doesn't match up to the bump map, so it just looks like the bark is green. Remember to add a bump map for it.
Also, those rings on the branch stumps are perfect - tree rings are not quite like that. I'm sure you can get references to those on the web though.

I hope this helps!

just a quick lighting test, i know there are some obviously "too-dark" areas, but i will be fixing that later on tonight..... i kinda like it...

please. let me know what you think!!!

love the mood man !!

- there's a highlight on one of the little shrooms that makes it look like plastic.

- maybe bring in some contrast by maybe a few bright yellow glowing fireflies or something (even small elves will do it but I'm sure you won't go about modelling those)

- I like the total black shadow on the back of the leaves in front, keep it that way !!

good work you lazy git !

Heh D, how are ya m8, glad you like.... i am going to try some blues and oranges in there too, subtle, not too strong, just bring out some of the grass and flowers, i also quite like the blackness of the left plant.... i think it works quite well....

Fireflies, yeah, i think they might look good, but i need some butterflies and fairies.. go on David, model me a Set-Fairy....

hmmmmmmmmmm, still more work to be done on these blasted lights.......

and i think the stump may have to go..... not oo sure just yet...

Plans:
1: going to remove the self illumination from the red shrooms altogether, it kinda sucks....
2: going to remove the grass object near the big shroom from the inclusion list of the spot under the scene thats casting the green fog...
3: Add Leaves to the trees, hopefully will be able to do this without adding TOO many polys to the scene...
4: FIX the lighting up perfectly
5: start working on Leigh's points

Kaos, those leaves look teriffic!
I love how you made them a little droopy to go with the heavy, foggy atmosphere(sp?). I think the only thing I might do with the leaves is give them a little more specularity to sort of show that maybe some of the fog has condensed on their surfaces. And also to help bring out the depth and layers that the leaves have. The dullness to them I think makes them seem a bit flat. Really great "deep forrest" feeling to your picture.

A friend did a little work over of the image in PS last night, i think it looks quite good.... still a lot of areas that need attention, HAVE TO GET RID OF THE DAMN SELF ILLUMINATION......

what do you think of MB's Version?? (Thanx Marcello)

Oh man that last pic is AWESOME! I really love it. THe pic your friend did in PS looked a bit over-saturated, but your interpretation of his adjustments looks great. I like how all of the leaves really stand out as individual leaves now. And getting rid of the glowing spots on the 'shrooms was a smart move. It really looks good now.

Kaos
06-14-2002, 08:02 AM
Hey Zr0-1, thanx, i kinda like it myself....

yeah, had inteneded to get rid of the shroom's bright spots a couple of renders ago, but just kept forgetting to do it.... i still have a lot of work to do on this picture, but i am enjoying it emensely, really having fun with this, the most fun i've had 3Ding in a long time........

i quite like the colours at the moment, so maybe the lighting and environment is almost finished, i still need to add maybe some kind of clouds to the background, or not, i'll try it and see how it looks anyway..... but definately gotta add butterflys and other such fauna...... i am also thinking of adding some ferns and other small plants to the scene, but am wondering if they will over croud the already busy scene....... but hey, only one way to find out......

I still have to add materials to the leaves, and maybe a low poly grass in the distant background to add that "fuzzy hill way off" feel to it....

well, lets hope i get some time to work on it this weekend....
thanx for the reply Zr0-1, now, to get some other people to reply to my scene, gotta get ideas, WANT crits, WANT ideas.....

hmmmmm, maybe if i pay people they will come and constructively dis my pic so i can improve it.........

cheers,
Adrian "Kaos" Hartrey
