I'm still importing models from an older version into A:M and so far it looks like any layered materials (i.e. 2 materials on the same group) do not work as they used to - i.e. the top material completely overwrites the bottom one.

Workarounds? Should I report it as a bug? Should I go back to 8.0 (Tempting sometimes... :) )

Check the material Nodes and set the ones that you need to be 'virgin' to not set via the contextual menu.
