Here are the guidelines for the May/June challenge

The Enchanted Forest

This time we focus on two words Enchanted and Forest

What you can do

There should be a forest of sorts
This forest needs to be "enchanted" meaning magical, something beyond your everyday forest (no not the rainforest :))
Texturing is allowed, but specify this in your threads as non-textured and textured pieces will be voted separately
Props can be added as long as they represent a fantasy look and feel
You can also model a character if you wish, just as long as there's a forest surrounding it
The character should be fantasy/magicial, so no humans, but elves/dwarves/centaur/unicorns e.t.c are allowed
If you choose to only model/draw a character/vehicle you can use a matte painting or other for your background [this of course does not apply to 2D entries]

There are however some restrictions to prevent unnecessary issues:

Matte paintings or other are only allowed for those doing characters/vehicles, if you choose to do an environment you have 6 weeks to create a masterpiece [this of course does not apply to 2D entries]
Images with a direct outside linking should NOT exceed the size of either 800x600 or 600x800 . . . If you want to show a larger formatted picture, do so using a link to the image . . . we have to keep in mind that there are still people with small monitors and slow connections.

This challenge is open for Characters, Vehicles, 2D and Environments.

The challenge focus this time around is modeling, texturing Lighting and Rendering

You DO NOT have to do all, but if so inclined you can.

if you choose to texture a character/vehicle *only* texture a character/vehicle, do not add an environment unless you state otherwise in your title heading, this makes it easier to categorize.

The Challenge starts May 20th and will run till June 30th Midnight EST

Good luck to you all and enjoy yourselves . . .

Any questions please ask myself, or any other challenge mods

To add keep in mind the format of the last challenge Thread titles, it was very easy for me to adjust and move threads... please use the following syntax as your thread titles

Enchanted Forest - Character, vehicle or environment - username

so for example

Enchanted Forest - Character - lildragon

good luck everyone, this one looks to be a helleva time :D

a su salud

Ok, not sure I get that matte painting rule...

You can make the contest in 2D and you can do it in 3D as well.
So what's the problem with matte painting?! It doesn't matter if a person does a 2D image with a forest a character and a vehicle all in the same canvas right? Or does it?

Matte Painting is like drawing in 2D and/or blending 2D and 3D together.

thanks

what lil was saying is that if you want to do a matte painting you must have a vehicle or character in it as well. In otherwords now plain matttepainted background. Is that right Lil?

Matte's are not 3D, they can look 3D if done really well, ala Ice Age, but not for this challenge, trying to keep things as fair as possible, Matte's are painted, hence they belong in 2D...

This is a challenge not a contest remember that ;)

Kaiskai pretty much yup, these are only reserve for characters and vehicles, not the environment entries themselves..

Equinoxx stated a forest in every scene regardless, hence the above rule. But remember if you state Character or vehicle in your thread that's how it'll be voted

I'm interested in joining in on the Challenges, but I'm not completely sure how to join in. Do I need to do anything special to join in or can I just create an image and post it? Do I have to specify that I'm joining the challenge beforehand? Show a sketch of my planned work? Any software restrictions? If I were to join in on the Enachanted Forest Challenge would I be able to use something like Tree Pro for backgound trees or would they all have to be created by hand?

Thanks!

Sbowling - you don't have to do anything special, you just have to start your own thread (please note the format regarding thread title that Lildragon posted here). As for sketches and such, well seeing as it's a WIP challenge, the more concepts and ideas you show, the better

As for sofware restrictions - well, there aren't any. Except...

Software that uses premade meshes/ drag-and-drop models/Click-This-Button-For-A-Tree plugins cannot be used.
This includes software such as Tree Pro, Bryce, Poser, etc.

The whole idea of the challenge is to create, from scratch, your own models, and then build up your scenes from there on.
If it wasn't for this rule, it wouldn't be a challenge, would it? ;)

Thanks! Now if I can find some time I might actually join in. ;' )

What about Maya Paint Effects?

I think if you can use Paint Effects to create a CONVINCING tree, go for it. It is alot harder to make them there than with Bryce and others. Especially if you want them looking randomized, that will take some artistic talent.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of joining this challenge even though it's a bit late (I have been working for a while on concept etc...) Can you clarify - does it end on the 20th or the 30th? I'm assuming the 20th but I see both in the guidelines.

Do any strictly 2D artists do these? I was just curious as that is pretty much what I am, no 3D at all, just draw and paint (Painter).
Are there any guidelines specific to 2D'ers?

Thanks

check in the 2D section of the challenge, thats what you are looking for, and no really different restrictions or anything, personally this is one where I think the 2D guys have the advantage.
