View Full Version : Milky Way Question
CobraX 08-26-2003, 05:50 PM Hey everyone,
I would like to have multiple opinions on this question:
How would you create a realistic looking Milky Way in Maya?
I tried, Paint Effects...i tried Particles...i don't seem to get a nice look.
Paint FX does stars 2 by 2. PArticles: Multipoints, are just making a too Milky cloudy milky way....
Please feel free to suggest anything.
Thank you very Much.
Xavier.

Erm, I wouldn't. I'd paint it in photoshop then load it in as a backdrop onto a plane, cylinder or acube, depending on what the camera was doing. Much easier:)

I would use the create particles tool.
Open the options, set the number to something low, and turn the radius up.
Then just sketch some particles on the ground plane. Hit enter, and move them to where you need them.
Change them to miltipoint and give them some color. Render them out, and maybe put some blur on them in post to soften the effect.

I was gonna recommend doing a mixture of the two suggestions.
For creating a 3d texture (ala photoshop), check out this tutorial:

I would use something like this, along with the particles to round out the effect.
So can we see what you've achieved so far?

What if you used the particle tool to sketch a sort of star pattern of particles. Like 5, 6 arms coming out from the center. Then you apply a vortex field and play around with the settings to make the particles swirl around like a galaxy. Then you just set initial state on the particles and you can animate the thing, spinning.

What kind of view of the milky way were you thinking. I had in mind something more like this:
http://www.noao.edu/noao/staff/mbrown/astropic/milky.jpg rather than an external view of a spinning spiral.

Hardware rendering is limited by your video card. So what type of video card do you have and how much ram is on it?

Theoretically 4k should be possible on a graphics card, but invariably it isn't. The most I've got out a 128MB card is about 1400 square.
Do you really need to render at 4k?

....unfortunately yes....i need 4k renders....or else you loose A LOT of quality on the IMAX screeen....

What's the starfield got to do? Does it have to animate, i.e. do you fly through it? If not then I'd really suggest just painting a background.
If you've got to fly through it then hardware rendering's out, although you could always just render in 1K buckets and stitch them together later.
Failing that you could use very very small spheres attached to the particles and render those.

Okay...the Milyway is done by a collegue...
