Hi all,

I am new to the forum and to modeling 3D objects in general, my question might sound trivial to you and I hope that it does so that I could get some help :).

I have a face model, a triangulated surface with holes at the eyes, mouth, and neck. I need to "close" this model so that the resulting face will contain no edges (I mean, no edges belonging to only one triangle), while the holes are preserved.
I thought of creating a smaller face (with less details) and place it inside mine, connecting it to the original one at the eyes sockets, lips, and neck. Being totally new to Maya I feel kind of lost just by looking at the available menus!

Could anyone suggest the simplest way for me to achieve my goal, i.e., close the surface preserving the holes?

Thanks a lot,
Giff

Under the edit mesh menu there is a nifty little tool called "Append to polygon tool" which basically allows you to manually fill a hole with a polygon. Select the object you want to change, in your case the face and activate the tool. Now you will see that the borde edges along the wholes are highlighted in a stronger green color. Click on one of the edges and a few pink/purple arrows along the edges will appear. Now click on one edge at a time following the direction of the arrow and you will eventually see that a polygon is created. When you have reached the next to last edge the tool will auto fill in the last step and all you have to do is hit enter to be done. Now repeat this for the other holes.

don't forget the "Fill Hole" tool under the mesh menu item. Another way to fill the hole...

use the select border edge tool. Under the select Menu item. Select the Border edge for the eye. Then select the Extrude Tool from edit mesh menu item. Switch to the scale tool "r" on the keyboard. and Scale the edge down by hand to nothing. Then swtich to vertex mode and merge the vertices.
