Where to start...?
I guess some background:

I have C4DR11 Core+Mocca+Hair+MoG and CDTools+VreelSkin&TPro and I use a Macpro3.2 8Core

My main area of interest is character modeling.Something i've been doing for quite sometime now,as the level of my modeling+texturing has become more realistic in the pursuit of realistic skin shading and lighting..i've started to wonder if maybe its time i got AR3 for SSS,SPD,AO&GI or perhaps Vray.

I don't think i've exhausted quite all the possibilties of the Core render, standard lighting and Vreel Skin yet...but SPD and AO would be very handy....SPD in particular as i also use Zbrush for detail modeling and map production.

Can anyone offer any opinions on the SSS virtues of AR3 versus Vray? and any issues related to realistic skin rendering with both render modules.....i've heard in the past that Cinemas SSS was not great and took a long time to calculate is this still the case?
I have read that VreelSkin's SSS does not work when GI is used in the scene is the true?
I know nothing whatsoever about Vray...other than it doesn't work with the Hair Mod. per se,you have to set hair to generate polys-something thats given me problems in the past,in that i loose my hair material settings+selections.

Thanks for any opinions in this area, there used to be a thread here called "i wanna see realistic skin"(or something similar) in which there was quite a bit of discussion about this area....but it seems to have vanished or i've got snow blindness(possible considering our current weather:) )

Cheers,
mala

My opinion is AR3's SSS still sucks big time, Vreel Skin is quite limited and Vray's SSS2 ain't bad at all.

About the new SSS2 in vray for C4D 1.2 (not out yet but apparently soon):

Nothing to do with skin but look at render times and polygon count.

That looks good and holy sh*t its fast!
I'm gonna keep an eye on the Vray forum and hope someone posts some skin examples when the new version is out

Dude you can totally make photoreal leaves with that shader. I tried in C4D and had some massive fail.

There have been a couple of nice tuts/information on AR3's SSS and i have become impressed with the quality. Slow, yes, but no need to buy other software to get nice SSS within C4D itself. I believe two people have developed vids on the subject. Can't recall links to them right now....

@Shademaster....yep i've seen some of your renders..very nice:thumbsup:

@soccerrprp....i don't have AR...so no 'cinema' SSS for me atm...

I started the post about skin and SSS a while back, and it got a good amount of attention for good reason, SSS in C4D is not on par with the rest of its quality features.

One thing that was consistant in all tries was the light bulb effect. This effect can be done in any application, which is not the desired result. Front and back scattering needs ro be controlled, the skin needs to have a soft glow, not a hard glow like a light bulb is in a plastic doll.

Because my main area is character design, and the aim is realistic rendering for skin, C4D was a no go for me, which was a shame when I was going to shed out for the studio bundle.

When I can see C4D at least produce SSS like Modo, or even better Mental Ray, I just mite look at C4D as complete soloution.

I don't know if you're aware of the very recent update for Vray. The new SSS is very fast, and although I'm not particularly skilled at rendering skin, I think it looks very promising.

This video (http://www.vimeo.com/8977008) shows the new SSS at around 8 minutes.

Best,

W

Thanks Kokosing...i hadn't got around to watching that video yet,SSS2 looks very promising and fast....i can't afford Vray just this moment...but i'll be watching and waiting to see what people come up with using SSS2 and high res photo face textures...something along the lines of IR-models (http://www.ir-models.com/index.php)but using C4D&Vray instead of lightwave..if i see some good examples then i'll get the credit card out:D

Yes indeed Lees perry renders are a product of every aspect of skill for the result he gets, somthing that just SSS cant do by itself, but certainly does finnish it off for realism.

I will be very interested in seing some comparable results.
