View Full Version : Looking for upgrade advice, CPU for an Asus P5B motherboard
Johnpv 01-12-2010, 06:35 PM Hey everyone. I'm looking to do a CPU upgrade. Overall the system runs great so I'm not looking to build a new one yet. I would how ever enjoy a little bit more power from the CPU end of things. I'm running an Asus P5B, which has the P965 chip in it, and a Core 2 Duo E6600. The bios is fully up to date, and I know it says it supports most of the newer C2D and C2Q, but I've heard it doesn't make full use of them and you're kind of wasting money on them. I'm just wondering if anyone here is running this motherboard and what CPU you have in it, or any other thoughts.
I know the new core I's run circles around the C2D,C2Qs but like I said I'm not looking to build a whole new machine right now, just want a little extra push. So I'm just wondering what CPU for my chipset is going to give me the most bang for my buck.
Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated!

P5B here on my old machine, ive run it with a 2.5 dual, 3.0 dual and 2.5 quad, all ran as expected.

Cool I think I'm going to go with one of the newer dual cores. Just need to decide between the E8400 or the E8500.

Why not just overclock what you have? Itll go over 3ghz quite easily.

I've just always been a little leery of overclocking. I know my luck lets put it that way. lol Plus going to the E8XXX chips would see a big drop in how much power the chip is using, how much heat its producing and a pretty big jump in cache on the chip.

Well you wont get anything for the old chip, upgrading and not getting anymore cored or significant speed boost seems a bit pointless. cpu cache makes very little difference to rendering, and the power savings are only when idle. Just seems a bit of a pointless change if youre not going for 4 cores.

if you are going to upgrade the processor, you should just go all the way to a quad core, upgrading a dual core to a slightly faster dual core is not worth it at all. you would see little improvement, but remember that a quad core will help you multi-task better as well as render quite a bit faster, but single-threaded tasks wont go much faster.
if it were up to me, I would buy a lower clocked version of a quad core chip, then overclock it to the speed of the higher clocked chip with an added CPU cooler. i have an i7 920 (2.66 ghz) overclocked to 3.6 ghz and it works wonderfully, I can put it to 4 ghz but I keep it at 3.6 because of efficiency.
