View Full Version : Cylinder with more than 200 height segments
Hi maxers,
I need this because I want to animate growth of a cyl along a path, with pathdeform modifier .....
The path is long and I have to make a cylinder with more than 200 height segments , seems this is max value !?
Thanx
Dare

Hey Dare,
Nope, you can't go beyond 200. . Another option for you might be an animated opacity map. Create a loft, add a gradient map to the opacity slot and animate it. .
Here's an example from Swami Lama:
-------------------------------------------------------
Method to leave a 'snail-trail' along a spline. Good for visualizing course of vehicles, or creating a 'write-on' effect for text, etc.
P.S. - Extract all files into common folder.

why not just animate a loft??

Or, you could simply grab the height ring and use a multiple connection tool with EP to do what you want.

Ok, thanx a lot for the replies
I've already solved the problem with animated loft, but this one with animated opacity looks great , thanx magicm :)

Controlling scale in the loft object I think is the solution.
You can use even bezier controllers to define the scale, and another params like twist, and so on.
Very useful.

I too would like to animate a cylinder extruding along a curving path ( like toothpaste being squeezed) but am having difficulty.
I have tried using a path deform but this just shoots off at a totally undesired angle.
Also I can't see any animatable parameters under the loft rollout and can find nothing under the help files about animating a loft.
How does one go about it exactly?
Under the deformations tab of your loft object, find scale, you have to create two extra keys. Than you have to animate those keys, see the picture below :

Thanks for that Dare. I'd never have found that in a month of Sundays.
Cheers!
