I created a poly box, opended material editor and made a Bitmap material in the diffuse channel. A BMP, rather large 6348x5655 and I want to apply it like a decal. But, it comes up distorted as if it was an 20x20 decal, uggg.

I unchecked Mirror and Tile and have "Planer from Object XYZ" selected, am I missing something?

Dare? hehe...

By "coming up" you mean the viewport display? If that is so, you might want to adjust the display size of viewport bitmaps. The settings related can be found under the Viewport renderer setup.

If you're using OpenGL, or Direct3D for viewport rendering, go to the "Coustumize/Preferences/Viewports" panel, and lokk for the Display Drivers box in the bottomn of the dialoge window. There you'll find the "Configure Driver" button, it'll bring up another window, containing the "Background Texture Size", and "Download Texture Size" settings. Put the both into the highest setting, and check "Match bitmapas close as possible" checkbox in both boxes.
This will allow max, to display bigger textures.

But maybe you're using softvare display mode, in that case, switch into OpenGL, of Direct3D, if you've got the graphics card. (Witch I doubt you don't...) To switch use the "Choose Driver" button in the "Coustumize/Preferences/Viewports" panel.

And another thing, by right clicking on the viewport's label, you can access a function called "Texture correction" this is useful if you're using softvare display, this will correct the distortion on the bitmaps, but slover...

If the problem is somewhere elsewhere.... Than I beg your pardon. :) And sorry for the above written.
You may also want to use an UVW map, rather than XYZ to UVW projection. With the UVW map you'll get more control over the texmaps.

And one question: The whole bitmap is displayed, or is it cropped, an the 20x20 resolution is the result of the crop?

The entire bmp is displayed, not cropped, and in the viewport it looks as if it was a 20x20 image stretched to a much larger res.

I will try your suggestions when I come home tonight. And thanks, those suggestions look in depth. :)

I did your suggestions (I'm ATI 9700pro using Direct3D) and 3dsmax would crash. So I changed to OpenGL and apply your suggestions and it works just fine. Thanks. :)

ATI drivers can sometimes screw up MAX, but there can be other incompatibile cards as well. Sometimes some tweaking, and newer drivers are needed... But if it works fine in OpenGL, why bother with tweaking... :D
Maybe if you want to use some special MAX 5.x DirectX features, your 9700 car would even do dx9.0.

Glad I could help. :D
