There is a lot of talking about stuff I dont understand/dont want to know. All I want to know is how do make realistic-looking glass. I'm not worried about the liquid in the glass right now, just the glass itself. Could someone make it so that i can turn a simple box into a glass one?

Here's the link:

There's no need to rewrite anything. Create a box and apply the glas material to it.

well i mean i dont know if im applying them correctly. i cant seem to get the caustics to work. the glass casts a normal box shadow. so basically all i need is the caustics to work. i have the glass look down already.

You don't need a tutorial for glas, you need a tutorial to learn to describe your problems precisely.

Post screenshots of your aterial and render settings, show a rendererd result or upload your scene so somebody may have a look and can tell you what's wrong.

And try the right forum next time, ths section is for posting tutorial, not requests.

that was kinda mean, but im new so please understand.
anyway, i uploaded the image along with what i want it to look like in the description. you can find it in my portfolio gallery.

do i have to use an external source to upload my scene, or does this site have that function? i cant seem to find it.

How is that mean?
You are struggling with just one aspect of a kinda easy tutorial. Posting precise informations would take like what? Minutes? Rewriting would take considerably more time and isn't actually needed.
You are new? So what, everyone was, that's what FAQs (http://http://wiki.cgsociety.org/index.php/Help:Forums/FAQ) are made for.

Im not sure what I'm looking at the FAQ for but it doesnt have anything about fixing the caustics.

Forget about the rewriting stuff. I'll just post a new thread about the caustics part.

Activated the neccessary settings on your photometric lights (Different object type than normal lights? Off work right now, but from the top of my head IŽd say, check the Photon settings...

Anyway, this tutorial has got the basics covered for you to go trouble-shooting:

http://www.xedium3d.com/tutorials/caustics/

For further information read the Mental Ray tutorials supplied with your software and buy a book like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Rendering-mental-ray-3ds-Max/dp/0240808932/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1263248567&sr=8-1

Have fun
