View Full Version : laggy file loading (Maya 4.5)
JasonA 08-26-2003, 12:34 AM I'm having troubles with one specific file that I've been workign on for quite a while now. Its a pet project of my thats come along ways. Anyhoo, its recently developed a bit of a problem with loading. When I open the file, it always hangs my system for several minutes at %70 loaded. Then, after a time, finally it lets go and loads the file. Then if I try to start a new scene while this file is loaded again my system hangs for several minutes before reseting maya. That part really strieks me as odd, since I figured it would just wipe the memory and start afresh.
Anyways, I've tried saving the file to a different drive, defragged all my drives. But it still happens. What I really don't understand is why it only happens when this particular file is loading/loaded. I'm freaking out a bit cause if I have to try exporting the file to some obscure format and re-importing it I'll lose ALOT of work in the process.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? Is there some sort of automated scene cleanup that I should be doing or..??

Try and Optimize your scene, I think it's under File menu.
This is not un-doable, so you should save this new optimized file as another name. Then try and load it again. If that dosn't work the only other thing I can think of is to export all you robjects into a new file.
Good luck.

Jason, delete all the unnecessary history on your objects, this might be the reason why the file loads so long.
it sounds, that maya is doing alot of scene calculation when you are opening the file.

this once happened to me when i inadvertantly duplicated a light 100000 times....file worked fine unless i wanted to save or import or load anything....
after you have done all of the things mentioned above and if it STILL lags....then open the .ma file in a text editor and look through it for anything that looks unusual....like duplicating a light thousands of times....then delete the offending text and save and reopen

Thanks for tips guys. 2byts, i think you were the closest to the problem, but I found a 'workaround' fix. Frankly I couldn't make sense out of most of the gibberish in the .ma file (although I didn't find 10,000 lights or anything:))
One thing I didn't mention in my original post is that the problem occured after I was tweaking the light linking for a bunch of lights. I was breaking connections, to all the objects in the scene, and then reconnecting the links to a few objects per light. Well after awhile I realized that I hdn't turned off "illuminates by default' on those lights, so I realized that if I ever merged this file with another, the lights would be illuminating all kinds of things I probably wouldn't want. Anyways, when I started to reload the file to work on it, is when I noticed the insane lag on loading. So I don't know if what I did created the problem, but here's what I did to get around the issue.
Basically I selected only the model and exported it into a seperate file. Then I re-loaded the corrupted file and selected only the lights in the scene to a seperate file. After that I opened eahc of those two files, and did the optimize on them. Then I merged the two files together into a new file. The lagging problem is gone and all i had to do was recreate all the light links Properly this time) which I just got finished.
Anyways, just thought I'd post that for a followup. Thanks for youre help folks!
