View Full Version : Lighting from inside a glass object with mental ray?

Hi,

Today I did a quick test, made a box with some thickness, and placed a mental ray omni light inside it. But since the light is inside the box, it said no photons were emitted at render so it wouldn't render anything. The box is using the Dielectric MR material in the Surface channel.

Any idea why I get this error, as if the light wasn't passing through? I don't have access to my work PC now but I'll try to figure it tomorrow, but if you guys have any idea let me know! Thanks:)

edit: oh yeah, this was tested in 3Ds Max 9.

What effect are you going for, a glowing orb inside the glass?

Anyway, maybe you can try turning off the double sided switch?

it said no photons were emitted at render so it wouldn't render anything. The box is using the Dielectric MR material in the Surface channel.Because when you use that 'old' legacy stuff you have to properly build the material. By properly building the material I mean if you want the material to interact with photons, you have to tell it how by assigning and configuring a photon shader.

I'd highly recommend using the A&D material instead of those legacy shaders as the A&D material automatically handles the photon settings (and much more) for you.

Morlankey: I'm going to make a rectangular box, 4m high, with some light fixtures inside it to light up a room. I'm doing some tests to light up the inside of a show room in a museum.

JeffPatton: Ah, thanks! It worked well:)
