CGTalk - animated trees

I'm sure most of you have seen this by now, http://vimeo.com/7809605 , the third and seventh. If not, see it.

Anybody know how the trees were done? I guess there is a plug-in or tool in 3-D Max?

Is there any similar tool for my/mental Ray?
