View Full Version : How do hooks work?

Has anyone heard from Arthur Walasek? I'm trying to use his obj Importer/exporter and I'm finding that my models are breaking up at the points where hooks exist. The mesh will be okay until it gets to a hook, where it turns the hook into a vertice which is not connected to the edge the hook was originally connected to. This creates "holes" in the mesh.

If not for this issue I think I'd have some ease with exporting.

Poly-based apps have no idea what a "hook" is.

Whether you export as OBJ, 3DS, or any other poly-based format, what you are seeing will occur. The solutions are:

1) don't use hooks if you plan to export to a poly-based format. You can use 5-point patches, but plan to close the holes manually.

2) if you MUST use hooks, put them in a place that will not distort when animated. That way the split edge will never reveal itself.

if you are exporting to something that can edit the mesh then leave holes that you can close up in your poly app.

It's often a lot more trouble to find and repair ALL those hooked or 5 point patches after they turn into polygons...
