View Full Version : Bump Mapping
ScantyNebula 08-25-2003, 02:13 PM I posted this in another forum, and I would like your guy's opinion .. this has been a problem for me ever since I started bump mapping.
Is it just me, or does bump mapping never appear rendered the way you want it to? So we're trying to make a rivet in a plane fuselage (Using BodyPaint R2) by drawing a straight line. HOWEVER, every time we render the bump map, the rivet comes out blurry, or jaggy .. and never crisp like we want it! Any tips on bump mapping?? We are using an image resolution of 300 dpi ... and bump pressue is like -25

The single most important thing to realise about bumpmaps is that solid color, like grey, white, black and so on doesn't do much. The important thing is GRADIENTS. So, the easiest way is to apply a slight gaussian blur to your map before using it, or tweak the filter params in C4D.
And generally, it has been said that bumpmaps should be about twice the size/pixel resolution of the corresponding colormap. I can't confirm it, but it sounds like a good starting point.
Sidenote: DPI doesn't mean squat here really. Just the raw pixelsize, height and width.
Meaby a bit too obvious, but be sure to have anti-aliasing checked in the render settings... :)

I didn't know that DPI didn't matter... thanks for that info.
So I have attatched a pic of part of the wing which shows how the bump map is blurry, and not crisp like it should be. I found that when we used gaussian blur, this only makes the bump map even more blurry when rendered, and when not blurred, the line can be jaggy ..
Not sure about this one =/
thanks

Have you played any with the interpolation settings? MIP, SAT, Alias etcetera? Does that help?
Maybe you could post the maps as well, and someone might spot some problems there...

Here is part of the bump for the wing.
The mapping is acting very strangely. Its like some of the bump lines appear, but others are barely visible, all within in the same angle. It doesn't make sense
I fooled around with Interpolation settings, don't do much tho.

Is that attachment full size, or did you scale it down?

I scaled it

cropped too, its only a section of the bump map.

My guess is to increase the size of the bump texture map. The jagging is probably the result of a texture map which is too small.

Also, the lighting plays quite an important part here. If you make preview renders using autolight only, then you will not get the expected results. I'm not saying that you have autolight here, but it looks a little flat, so maybe some changes to the lighting can do wonders.
And, try disabling/enabling MIP falloff (iirc) in the render settings.
