Hello everyone! Basically i want to specialize in character creation, sculpting and texturing, and the most difficult problem i have is creating realistic hair or fur. I only tried the Hair&Fur modifier in 3dsmax 10 with mental ray and i did get good results, but there are special problems to solve: closeups, wicker hair (should i model that and apply hair on the surface), the connection to the skin.

Any methods of creating cg hair is welcome, thanks!

I've also been looking for good, detailed guides for creating hair, mostly for creatures, but I'm using Maya. I haven't used Max in a while, but if someone has good advice for Max, I'm definitely looking.

Digital Tutors and Gnomon both have great dvd's on Max and Maya Fur/Hair.

Max is using Joe Altiers' Shave and a Haircut. But you need to stress where your having issues so some one can address your questions.



You can use Maya hair guides to control your fur as well.

Basically your using the hair system dynamics to apply dynamics to control the fur.
This is in the help documents that come with Maya.

Thanks i am already getting the Digital Tutors, and will look up for the Gnomon ones too. I think i will model a part of the hair, that is the wicker part (strange word, don't know if you get it but i mean when you create from hair something like a wattle or frail). Texturing it will be hard to get the realism. Any tips are welcome.
