Its not low poly! not even near...

but it is a gorgeous car, very nice modelling, you know Simon, if you want to challenge yourself, model that same car but do not use meshsmooth or geometry aprox. Belive me, its hard!

I love the texturing too, did you use individual stickers or several large textures?

???

Excellent work as always Simon! :) The new renders really kick @ss. RmachucaA why on earth would anyone want to model without using the meshsmooth algorythm, seems like alot of uneccessary work to me
 :)

Very nice modelling job! The textures are also top notch! The reflection looks a little odd though. I'm seeing a sort of rainbowish noise look instead of a clean white reflection.

Ok valid quesion, and i'm posting a reply cause i need some
of these answers as well. I would assume that if this model
were intended to become and "in-game" model that you can
basically forget about the meshsmooth, cause game engines
don't allow meshsmooth.

Anyone...is this response correct??

Or if anyone can add to this please do.

Additionally i am trying to complete an art test for a company
and their criteria is 15000 poly's for a car and i am assuming
they are not talking meshsmooth here.

Sorry if i have gotten off topic in your thread Simon!!

BTW i really like your model & no crits here, but would love to
see higher detail renderings. Was also wondering what
the final purpose of this model was, and if meshsmooth was
used how many iterations, oh and also what the final poly count
was. before or after meshsmooth?

thx

I'll take care of this one:

Meshsmooth doubles or triples the polygon count simply by looking at the angles of the poly's and the proximity of one poly to another and adding a poly in the middle smoothing it out, depending on the amount you apply it will easily triple the polycount.

No game engine on earth will use meshsmooth, NONE.

And as for that Company your applying for, its 15000 polys only, nothing more, but in my opinion if you can do a 9000 poly car that looks better then a 13000 poly car (Colin Mcrae rally 3) then it would certainly show a LOT of talent.

And the true talent of a game modeler is to make things look HIGH POLY using the fewest poly's.

I agree with the last couple of replies, they seem like valid points to me
this is quite a good description of meshsmooth I think if you want to read itwww.trinisica.com (http://www.trinisica.com/sub_learn_tutorial.asp?lv=3&mode=2&show=polymodeling)

you can see the wires in the animation a bit [rendering a big version atm] but I will check the poly counts for you, and I'll render out the wireframes too.

nice looking, as usual :)

excellent ride !!!

and the meshsmooth explained a lot... and it kept me from grabbing the old wire from the old thread and asking where the low poly comment came from ;)

none the less.... its a great car and it would look right at home on the front as box art

OMG thats beautiful...I love it...the lines, the paint, everything is perfect...only crit is you compressed the final image too much making it look grainy...but thats easily fixed...well done!!

RmachucaA

Thanks for the details on Meshsmooth!!

That straightens it out for many people.

I wasn't asking about that though. And i see your
point about trying to make a 9k poly model look
as good as a 15K poly model, however i would think
that because the company is asking for a model
with that particular poly count I should probably follow
the instructions.

Also i have never modeled a car with 15K polys so i have
to find out what that looks like before i can try and emulate
that with 9K version.

Thanks for your response though.

Also i agree that a talent of a games modeller would be
to try and get more with less detail, but i think things are
slightly changing. Ex. Like you mentioned Colin McRae 3 = 9K
But whatever the reason this company is asking for 15K =
one car model.

See what i'm saying.

Simon, again soory i am ranting off topic in your thread.
promise i'll post thoughts about your model next time!

Awesome Simon!,

Thanks for posting the wires and the bigger render.

Yeah i can see the detail from where the rims meet the
tires now, I couldn't make it out in your 1st render.

I really cant give any comment, i think this is a great peace of art. Good luck man :)

simon - nice image :)

just one thing that niggles me every time i look at it....the reflection of the rear mudguard in the body seems a little too strong and perhaps even a little unnecessary...the only other things i'd say is that if your going to go to the effort of making them stand out, i'd say the discs need some sort of texture and they need some calipers so they work ;)

is the rainbow effect on the windows down to a low res hdri or a wierd jpg reflection?

SimonReeves
08-26-2003, 10:08 PM
thanks for your comments peoples

halo, about the reflection on the window, it is from the hdri map,

the only way I could change/fix it [i did try :)] would be making making it really bright and bleeching it out :/
but then it effects the whole image if you see what I mean.

Simon you never quit do ya :p, really wish you'd present your amazing work in more of an environment tho, but this piece does stand well on it's own.

Great style and work here, I absolutely love the first pic (although the pose is neutral) but the Mech pilot gets all the props here :) very nice. I'll add those to the gallery.

You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Nice work!

upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame (http://gallery.cgtalk.com) - which you are now placed
