I need to Export some Geometry from Lightwave to 3ds max but the fbx exporter that comes with lightwave sucks and don't work. Does any one have and ideas on how to get it to work?
I'm on lightwave 9.5 and 3ds max 2010
cheers in advance.

The FBX exporter should work. Otherwise there is PointOven (Google it) or if you have a copy of BodyPaint 3 or Cinema 4D you can load a .lws scene or .lwo in there and export using their FBX exporter which is much better.

Otherwise export by hand .lwo files using the .obj format. Just make sure you get the sizes right on import into Max or if you export back out again (as well as a col texture and UV map applied to your surfaces to make sure UV's are intact)

The LW FBX exporter from Lightwave can be a bit dodgy at times.

I hope that helps.

We are using Righthemisphere´s DeepExploration for years now.
Try to get an evaluationversion from their site. Its only the evaluation period thats limited to a certain period of time.
You would have to have a copy of 3dsMax installed on the same machine, though...

On the other hand *.OBJ in most cases (exports only one UV-Map per surface, though..) still does a good job, too (Should have read Infinite´s post more thoroughly: he mentions this already - and to a greater extent... :D)

In both cases you would have take care of the orientation (Y-up versus Z-up) and scaling in general and the units-settings in Max. But thats pretty much one click...

True but when the evaluation runs out...

You can always purchase it, that's if you can afford the annual subscription of $365.00 or the standalone price of $895.00.

I still have a really old copy from '05 that works but it is tempremental at best directly converting from Max to LW. Doing it by hand is the safest option unless you can get FBX to work.

.

Well, of course that´s a valid point - I got the idea it was just for the time being that he needed a solution...

Anyway, I definitely second: it is always a good idea to take a look at PointOven (www.ef9.com (http://www.ef9.com)). For 99 $ US its an absolute bargain - in particular if you need to transfer animation from package to package its probably the best thing for 3d since sliced bread...
