View Full Version : Did you try the boped ?
I tried it and it seems great for cartoonish characters.
Here is the link : http://www.3dluvr.com/pepeland/Misc/Boped2.htm
But i have a problem though, i don't know how to resize it properly, each time i try to change the overall size of the bones the skeleton f--cks up.
Does someone know how to do ?

Allez transformation re-british pour le plus grand nombre :
Maybe the final version won't be bugged (this one is beta or alpha), anyway the meanwhile i'll try to build a simple character around this boped to try it out, i'm still very impressed with its setup (plus that it's free). I'll check the weight of my files then.

I had the same issue with the Boped. It's and great rig but not very adaptable. I had created my own rig but have six characters to do and the first rig took a fair amount of work and was not perfect by a stretch. I tried adapting my own rigs but ran into some breakage and wierd stuff.
I ended up using charRigger by Michael Comet. You can get it at http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/index.html. It uses a set of pre-named point helpers to identify the pivots and then creates a complete rig at the push of a button. It really works and creates a rig very similar to Boped. I believe Daniel Martinez used the fundamentals of Comet's rig for Boped.
Give it a try. Michael has a lot of excellent tuts on his site :)
Thanks a lot Brent, i'll give it a try.
Nice site you have by the way, great use of flash. :)

Thanks JT
Truth is that site is very old now and desperately needs attention. I'm not hugely fond of Flash these days, at least not fully-Flash sites. As soon as I have a few hours, perhaps over Christmas, I will be looking to simplify it.
I appreciate the compliment though and I hope the charRigger works for you. I did have one bug that Comet thought was very odd. Max became very unstable after creating the rig as long as the macroscript remained in the UI\Macroscript directory. Once I removed the script though (the rig doesn't need it after creation) all was stable again and the rig functions great. If you have a similar problem, just shift the script once the rig is created. If you have additional characters to rig, simply move the script back into the UI\Macroscript folder and create your rig, then move it again. Voila. Good luck!

I've used charRigger and it's great, but for some odd reason it really slooooooows down my viewports when it's attached to a mesh, building a normal rig from scratch works nicely, but with charRigger everything slows down, even the envelopes, and that's a pain to handle as it is ;),
what I really need is a nice logical, readable tut on setting up a nice functional rig... know of any?
the one in this book is good, but somewhat basic http://www.the3dbuzz.com/mastering/about_mastering.htm

I agree, if I had the time and budget to create unique rigs for each character (I am a one man animation studio in a team of graphic designers) that would be the way to go. I would love to master rigging. Not enough hours...
There is a great tut in New Riders "Inside 3ds max 4". The book is based on two real-world scenerios - one for gaming and one for broadcast. Well worth the price. There is a tut for a rig with very similar functionality as charRigger and Boped. I have the book and did the tut. The rig is great but the exercise was so time consuming I had to find a way to rig the remaining characters quickly and charRigger worked for me. I haven't noticed a slowdown. I placed my meshsmooth above the skin mod though and have it set to render at higher iterations rather than display them.
Check out "Inside 3ds max 4" by New Riders

Yeah, the inside 3ds Max 4 character rigging tutorial is good. I'll vouch for that one.

I think Sergio Mucino said that he was writing either another or updated turorial as well at Character Shop. I learned a lot from this one. Also, Paul Neal has some good setups --can't remember if he's posted a tutorial on it or not.
