View Full Version : Mudbox Question
Plaidballoon 01-03-2010, 08:40 PM Hey, I'm completely new to Mudbox, and am currently on the 2010 trial version. When I load up a default object, it renders completely black, and makes it impossible to do anything. I know there's probably an easy fix to it, but I've searched around the internet and could not find one. If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated. Thanks

This is usually a GPU issue. What card have you,and what driver version?

You mean the processor? Sorry, I'm no good with computers >-<
If we're speaking about processors, then mine is a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU (T4300 @ 2.10GHz) with the version: 6.1.7600.16385

u.u faaaaiill.
I'm a noob at computers, so by saying that do you mean my processor? If so, my processor is a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU (T3400 @ 2.10GHz), with the version: 6.1.7600.16385
musashidan says its your graphics card... :D
GPU = graphics processing unit

I think they're the same thing.

Maybe you have an onboard GPU which more than likely won't suffice for mud. Did you install the operating system yourself? On the right bottom corner of your taskbar on the desktop there should be an icon that gives access to a floating dialogue with your GPU settings and driver info.
Also,within Mudbox,click on Help> System info. This will display your specs. The GPU will be at the bottom of the list.

Making fun of experienced users here won't get you far, son.
I think they're the same thing.
You are incorrect in your thinking.
CPU = Central Processor Unit
GPU = Graphics Processor Unit
Also, your GPU isn't going to work with Mudbox. You'll need to buy an actual GPU before you can start doing actual graphics work. Your CPU will work, but you need a graphics card.

Thanks Sho Pi. I had absolutely no idea what "u.u.faaaaaaiiiill " meant so i didn't take offense.
And if it was indeed a dig at me, i would request that the OP -for future reference- take heed that my preferred method's of communication are primarily the English language and body language.The latter being an obvious non-entity in an online environment.

Oh, that wasn't a 'dig' at you, I just barely registered for this forum and I thought I had posted before that, only to come back the next day to see it never posted. So yeah sorry for the misinterpretation, it was irrelevant to what you said. As for getting a graphics card, what one would you guys suggest? I just got this laptop for Christmas, so yeah, again, I'm clueless on what would be preferred.
*EDIT*
Are you completely sure that it is the graphics card as well? I remember the very first time I opened it, it worked fine, but whenever I reopened it, it would make the object black.
*EDITx2*
Yeah nevermind, it's probably the graphics card.

Well your comment was only contextually "aimed" anywhere, so I apologize for being blunt in return...
Check your laptop to see if it can take a new GPU. If not, well... Your alternatives would be to try Mud on a different computer (desktop, or a laptop with a dedicated GPU), or try Zbrush if you haven't already. I prefer Mudbox by far, but Zbrush is CPU-dependent, instead of GPU-dependent like Mud.
If it makes you feel any better, my laptop has a Geforce Go! 6150. They should have never put the exclamation point in the name; there's nothing exciting about it, and I can't use Mudbox well at all on my laptop either!

take a look at ZBrush if you are using a laptop and can't upgrade the graphics card. It doesn't require a beefy GPU since it uses the CPU for all sculpting and display.

An 8 or 9 series Geforce with 512megs-1000megs of ram will do the trick. You can pick one of these cards up these days for dirt cheap. As i mentioned above,an onboard GPU won't cut it. If you search on any Mudbox forum pertaining to this topic you'll find a raft of similar threads from many,many people who've had this issue.

Seconded; only the Original Poster is on a laptop... These cards won't likely won't be available for his or her use.
I run Mudbox on a Geforce 7950GT with 512MB of RAM, and it runs great.

I use Mudbox and Zbrush, and for future projects I intend on using both as they both have strengths and weaknesses, but due to your graphics card issues I would suggest moving to Zbrush, in my opinion it has much better sculpting tools than Mudbox but it isnt as streamlined as Mudbox in terms of exporting Normals and Displacements for Maya, etc.
