i used photoshop contrast, levels and saturation tweaking
also burn tool for the mountains and fire, and dodge tool for the light rays

however burn and dodge tools mess up the colours as you see so better invest some time paint them i'd say :)

ok i don't like that shiny light from the 2nd picture there... I like the old one better. And the soldier in the front looks like he's about to trip and fall to me.. I'd like to see the flag raised higher than his gun, perhaps it's too late for that kind of change though.

I personally would like to see a version that is half the old, half the new. I like the shininess, but it's a bit too much in the second. toning it down a bit will give a great contrast to the image. 8-)
