View Full Version : A heads up for Radeon users
malc0lm 08-25-2003, 12:54 AM Hi!
I got my new computer the other day and ofcourse I installed C4D on it, turned on OpenGL and evrything was fine and dandy... until I changed to 4-point view.
Then all the four viewports turned grey and I just pushed "A" to redraw them, no biggie.
But then It keept getting all grey when ever I changed viewport or added something in the scene. Quite annoying.
If you've gotten these syndrome this might help (it solved the problem for me atleast):
Tick off "Smart window refresh" under "Edit > Preferences > Viewport > OpenGL shading"
Happy modeling!

What are the known issues between Radeons and Cinema 4d? I was thinking about getting one to replace my 4200 but I know ATI has some issues with certain programs.

Emberghost, as far as I've experienced this is the _only_ problem with radeon for me. Havnt heard any other probs with it either.

Thanks for your response malcolm, this is good news indeed. I have been an nvidia fan for a long time and still am.....but....their new fx cards (except 5900) and stuff are way under par compared to ATI's stuff. I like Nvidia's Quadro FX's but I don't have that money heh.
I would appreciate it if more users said if they have had any problems besides this and Cinema 4d if they are using a Radeon card.
OT: Good news as well, I hear the new Radeon 9900 is coming out in a month or so.

I hope to be getting a Quadro FX 1000 soon. Are there any know issues with C4D with OpenGL and Dual monitors?

I run a Ti-4600 with OGL on two monitors--no problems.
Only thing about the ATI cards, other than the FireGLs, is that they don't support dual planes. Thanks ATI.

Actually the radeon 9700 does ''support'' dual planes..you just have to know how to enable them.
The only difference between firegl and normal is the opengl extension that the driver will use.

Could you elaborate this, please? Does it apply to Radeon 9800 Pro as well?

I'm afraid it's not available for the 9800. The only thing you can change there is from SE to PRO edition.
The 9700 has a softmod hack or you can do a hardware hack, replacing one transistor on the card.

OK, thanks.

This site says (http://www.3dchipset.com/utilities/universal/rivatuner.php) that Rivatuner supports the 9800, so i think its possible.
go here to download rivatuner:
rivatuner (http://download.guru3d.com/rivatuner/)
If you don't understand how to use it, try to search google.com or look at guru3d (http://www.guru3d.com).

It supports the 9800, but it doesn't firegl it.
The 9800 should work with no problems, mine is perfectly happy.
is there any good nvidia-cpu grafix card that is really good for c4d8 AND the upcoming halflife2? i wanna upgrade my hardware for less than 175euro... any chance?

for that amount of money you won't get much. Second hand perhaps. You could get a 5800, but it has a crappy cooling sollution as you might know. I consider the 5800 to be a beta card...released too soon because they were too late delivering it. The 5900 is a decent card with a cooling system you can sleep with (sorta), but benchmarks are highly unreliable + allot of people had to return broken cards due to a severe hardware failure.
As for playing half-life 2. The game has been developed closely with ATI (they are currently using a radeon 9800 256 mb to develop the game). Doom III has been optimized for nvidia cards. Farcry will probably run a bit better on nvidia cards as well sinse they started out developing the game with a geforce 3.

What are dual planes?

Dual planes works like that.. when an object is moving in front of another, the object from the background is not redrawed.
And for Ati's -> www.nvworld.ru (english also)
SoftFireGL .. that's a mod for normal Ati's to work as FireGL

I have a geforce4 Ti 4600 on a mac but it doesn´t allow me to activate dual planes - shouldn´t it be possible with this card?
how can I activate it?
thnx for suggestions

The card is capable of dual planes, but sadly Macs are not. This is a limitation imposed by Apple, not nVidia or Maxon.
