Hiya, its my first time venturing into this part of the forum, but i just thought id start a thread about the issue of XSI and halflife 2...

"We will also package up all of the custom Half-Life 2 XSI add-ons and make them freely available to people who are already using XSI."

Im a 3dsmax user, and have never even had a play with XSI before, but apparently a free version will ship with some development stuff for halflife 2, for mod and map makers and stuff, so i will probably end up getting this and try my hand at a bit of mapmaking...
Anyways, erm, this isnt really a help thread, or that informative really, just thought id try sparking something up about it :hmm:

a few links....

A good way to attract a lot of new users to the program i think :)

You wont actualy need to use the light version of XSI for building maps, i think Valve have their own editor, which they will also be shipping with the game, free.

Cheers,
Dan.

I think it will ship with the hammer editor, which is all well and good, but after using worldcraft before, it is good, but the modelling tools it provide are a bit limitted... although it may be better this time round :)

Valve has always used there own Seperate editor for Map editing. Its quite powerful and has more tuneing that makes mapping in a 3d software seem retarded.

However, Valve also makes it incredibly easy to place meshes into levels. If they keep it as they did in HL then its as simple as make mesh, convert to there model format (can't remeber the file name) and place an entity. The entity calls the model, latest version of hammer shows models in the editor, so that you can align them easily. Heck I've known people who created a 747 with a model outside and a level inside. Works great I hear (for Hostile intent).

However, before, particles were impossible, and making things such as a wall, into a model wasn't exactly sensible... Now it should be easier.

ermm man i miss HL mapping, hurry up valve i wanna use Half-lifeČ dammit! lol
