I was wondering the other day how old CGtalk was? and when the 10 year anniversary might be? Today I stumbled upon web.archive, tried a search and saw this

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.cgtalk.com

CGTalk way back in 2001:

http://web.archive.org/web/20011216132344/http://www.cgtalk.com/

Even up to 2003, for a while, the Lightwave forum was actualy more active than the other 3D Application specific forums! How times have changed :)

It's so cool seeing CGTalk from way back and how much it has changed over the years.

Aye, true enough.
These days though, I think anything LW tend to predominantly gravitate to either Newteks own boards or Foundation3D and SQ. With the latter two being nowhere near as active for LW as Newtek but more so than here.

Makes sense I suppose, if there are more LW users on those areas, whereas back when, things were different, in fact, here used to be the place to come for assistance but as you say, things change. :)

it looks quiet i guess, but much stuff is happening, even though it might not seem that way.
Core, LWcad4 with Nurbs, Smoke simulation is in Beta, Dynamics plugin is in Beta, DPont.

..even though it the forums are quiet, it looks to be a very exiting 2010 :)

And how some moderators over the years have become more power-abusive. Ahh yes... I remember well. Perhaps during 2010 they will learn to temper their responses appropriately.

Look at that, Lightwave sitting high above all the other 3D apps! I have come to realize that the traffic volume for each 3d app on cg society does not necessarily mean one program is more popular than the other at a given time. I would think it does mean that there has been a dramatic decline in visits from users of certain 3d programs for some reason. :curious:

Agreed.
I do hope that in 2010 old hatchets can be buried.

We have a ton of new developments coming down the pipe for the Lightwave world.

Perhaps they became less tolerant and quicker in their responding to trolls, troublemakers etc. I still believe that the trouble that took place on this particular forum early on was primarily attributable to a lax and trusting attitude toward troublemakers and occasional absentee moderating. The growing free for all food fight that ensued fostered a vibe toward the LW crowd that wasn't welcoming .

I think this place could come back to life as I've seen a pretty good level of moderator performance in recent years. Hope to see LW Core spark more interest here.

I think TomThumb means in general. I am afraid I have to agree to a certain point (more an attitude of 'do as I say, not as I do' kind of thing) but I guess dealing with some people and Ego's can be hard sometimes, CGTalk is a great place. Most moderators do a fantastic job, the LW forum is very well looked after, it's just a shame it's so quiet.

I agree with your statement, with the progression and expansion of CORE I think this forum will light up again!

This. The complaining, attitudes, and politics were ridiculous during the old lightwave 7-8.x days. I've been the moderator for years here, and since it's not as crazy as it used to be I pretty much leave you guys alone. But I'm always watching... :)

personally, me leaving this forum was due "server too busy"...
it was like that for months and months, it just got too annoying...

Could be worse, we could be Animation Master. They've been completely removed from CGTalk. Although from the practices of some of the moderators around here, I suppose we're next.

doubt it,..
but other LW forums are quiet as well,
probably because many are busy over at the restricted HC section.

it will probably continue this way some months... until Core is released...
might be that the forums will not be blooming again before late summer...

Well it will be great to see the influx of people. Perhaps there will be a new forum opened up called CORE? will CGSociety allow that?

Core is more like a w.i.p.
Core will be bundled with LW9.X (or HC as the name will be)

so there won't be a need for a Core forum the first couple of years.
but yes, might be needed later on as it's a completely new application.

The best bet would be renaming this forum the NewTek Lightwave/CORE 3D.
No promises, but I would wait until CORE has been out for a while.

NewTeks forum: 234 active users; 58 members, 176 guests.
SpinQuad forum: 47 active users; 5 members, 42 guests
Foundation 3D forum: 54 active users; 14 members, 31
CGTalk LW-Section: 8 active users; 3 members, 5 guests

I'd say that CGTalk is by far the least visited of all LW-Forums.

Look we can over the old arguments over and over again, or look forward to the future.
Ok the numbers can only go but up.
Lets bury old hatchets, you know the kind that caused a LOT of grief in these parts, and move forward. Shade post is right on target on the HELL that it used to be to manage this forum.

Who is arguing?

I was simply stating some facts, that's all. No need to get worked up.

I know, it is just that on this side of the fence we hear that point "A LOT".

I do find it sad to see LW coming from top to the bottom of the list during these years.

I'll hold my breath and wait to see what will 10 (both year and version) brings!
