View Full Version : A philosophical/aesthetic question

I could really use some advice on something. I am developing a suite of online applications for the youth market (12-30) and these include the ability to mashup web pages with images and animated clips. So the question is - at the very highest level, what should these clips 'look like.' There is nothing to stop them being the exquisitely rendered pieces I have seen here, that is typical in fantasy mags and games like WOW. But they could also be very simple blocky 2D graphics like South Park. Either way characters have to have a strong identity. Here's my thinking so far and I'd love a sanity check. The 2D animation is much cheaper, but that isn't even the most important reason I'm leaning that way. My concern with the super glossy 3D version is that the clips then feel like they are something that has been created for the users rather than something the user could have created themselves 'if they had the time.' I want the user to feel like they are doing a mashup and that they are the creator and am concerned that this could be undermined by fabulous images. This should be a showcase for the user and only secondarily for the artist.
I am sure that this kind of issue is very familiar to art directors. But I am a computer guy and could use some help.
many thanks

I tend to agree with your assessment.

If you're going to "mash up" things, I would think that it would be beneficial for the things that you "mash" to be rather low-resolution, even two-dimensional, so that "all that gorgeous detail" doesn't get in the way and start to look muddy.

thanks for getting back to me
really appreciate it
The 'muddy' observation hadn't occurred to me. It is after all an aesthetic consideration and I'm a nerd who can't previsualize it and recognise this potential problem.
so thanks
and I am worried about the 'ownership' issue
