View Full Version : faking multiple materials per object...

just was playing a bit with texturing etc. in 6.5 and came up with this test image. Nothing fancy as you can see also no special lighting set-up etc. My goal was to archive a look that someone would believe that an EI object* could have multiple materials applied.

*Maybe V8 can do this (multiple materials) i dunno, since i donīt have it.
I think with a proper scene set-up and UV-mapping for example one could archive really good results.

Have you tried with reactive shaders?
Or watch some of the tutorials by Ian on Noise Factory which is reactive where you can add a shader to the red,green or blue material of the object, i think that is how it works but i am not sure.

i must admit i donīt understand what the term "reactive" means. I googled for that and i saw that Scott had the same question at the EITG Forum and Ian replied about a Colorphium tutorial. Problem is i canīt find that tutorial. I always thought when using shaders (stacking them) or textures that it still represents "one" material per object, with all itīs properties.
Maybe iīm wrong here. What i tried to archive with my fake example is to simulate different material properties (like varying specularity etc.) on one object.

i think with the technique Ian describes itīs not possible (at least in 6.5) to vary specularity, transparancy, refraction, etc. on the different areas.

Hi Stefan,
you can always vary the amount of attributes with textures. But you cannot make two different specular sizes on one object (i.e.).
Aynone remember the filter ball up until 2.75 (2.8) ;)

thanks for the info! The bunny example was only a test for me on how to archive such a task, because i was inspired by various Rhino/Brazil works from Paul S. and thought i give it a try in EIAS.
