Firstly, i'll explain the Northern Ireland: 1983 project, and what we are attempting to do.

Basically, the main idea was to feature as much as we could from the 83-84 period, in regards to media, style, and equipment, which is one of the main thing's we're looking for to make it seem more in-depth, and playable. We're making every attempt to make the project as unbiased as possible, but at the same time, it has to be remembered that there were horrendous actions on both sides, and more so in regards to the paramilitaries on both the Loyalist, and Republican sides - and the security forces were hardly innocent either.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy it when we finally release it, but with the current work load, you're looking at between 10-12 months, mainly due to the plot design, level design, and coding work, though its rapidly starting to come together.

1983. The height of The Troubles, and the Cold War.

Northern Ireland, and in particular County Armagh and County Down, have been wracked by recent attacks on the RUC, the Army, and the civilian populace. According to Intelligence reports, this is believed to be due to a recent split in the Provisional IRA, with the hardliners forming their own paramilitary organisation:

The Ultach Fuascailt Armtha, or the Ulster Liberation Army.

You take the role of 29 year old Sgt. John Casey, a member of The Increment, a shadowy black ops unit comprised of SAS, SBS, and Intelligence operatives set up in the early 70‘s to deal with threats against the crown, and NATO.

The Increment's Blue Team have been dispatched to the province in an attempt to cripple the new splinter group by tracking down and eliminating or capturing their leadership before there are further attacks, via any means necessary.

The threat has to be eliminated before it is too late.

Failure is not an option.

The game style its self can be described as a sort of hybrid of elements of RPGs, and FPS - one of the main design influences is from Deus Ex 1 in regards to the style of the character development, and a few other bits and pieces. Most info in regards to the style is on the ModDB entry.

Primarily, we're an Indie group at present, so as a result are unfunded. We're aiming to produce a techdemo using the UDK, then approach publishers with said demo. Of course, all involved in the project receive payment for their services on the release of the end product - this comes out of the gross profit that we'd make, minus other fees (such as Epic's cut, or a publisher's cut.). Of course, like any Indie project this is an uncertainty, and if it doesn't work out then we can also look at the possibility of still releasing as a freeware project, as we're using the Unreal Developer's Kit.

As this wouldn't be complete without links to our work, and thats important considering what we're asking:

I don't quite know what to say to be honest! Its an interesting idea i'll give you that, but I suppose having grew up in NI it all seems too close to home for me. But if they can make games in the Gulf and other parts of the world then why not here. It sounds like a tough sell though...

Although I am definitely interested in seeing where it goes from here and how you intend to portray it. You will need to do some fancy story footwork to not offend some group or another :P

Sadly the game stuff is not really my bag and I have been out of the loop for too long to make any real commitments but I wish you folks all the best in this and I will keep an eye on the thread and see how its progressing :)

Good Luck

Yeah, heard that line quite a few times by people when i've shown it to different people. The main reason why we're doing it, is due to the fact it hasn't been done - theres plenty of films, books, music, and TV programmes about what went on, yet not a game. In theory, if its worked well enough, it could work well. Provided you don't end up with Joe Public screaming bloody murder before even playing it, as with the MW2 Airport mission.

Though we're trying to get a good balance of the sides, and the reasoning behind their particular actions, it is almost impossible not to offend someone, or cause someone to be offended on the behalf of someone else, as is commonly the case now. Either way, we're working our damned hardest to make sure that it causes as little offence as possible - thought provoking is what we're aiming for, not offensive. :P

Much appreciated, I'll be posting a link when we've next got a news update up (Should be shortly, I hope), which shows a bunch of stuff we've been working on.

Thanks! :)
