just wondering if anyone has bought this from the softimage site and if its any good or not. :) have to do some xsi next year at uni and with a lack of books on the recent releases, im thinking this is my only option.

I would recommend the video tutorials at
http://www.3dtutorial.com/
The tutorial Bernard Lebelmade is 13 hours long and costs $50
and the free web tutorials at
http://www.edharriss.com/
those will teach you just as much as that tutorial pack (and save you a few bucks)
best regards

thx stefan, ill check em out :)
was close to buying it when at the checkout the price jumped from £50 to £70 after they'd added £10 for shipping and £10 for tax 0_o :annoyed:
If I am not mistaken... all of the tutorials can be downloaded of the web at SI's site... the cd is just a "conveinience" for those with dial-up.

I ordered the tutorial kit a while ago and have been going through the excercises for the past couple of weeks. It's the same tutorials that are included in the on-line help/tutorial files included with the software. I knew this before purchasing the kit but I'm the type of person that prefers a hardcopy book in front of me rather than trying to share the screen real estate b/w the app and the on-line tutorial. Imo, the tutorial kit is well worth the money and is nicely packaged. When I ordered the kit I also opted for the EXP disc and XSI t-shirt offer. Good stuff!
Cheers jdex, found them on the site and left some downloadin through the night. :)
and thanks to signal, i'd like a hardcopy infront of me too but seeing as they can be downloaded i cant really justify the price (although the package does look nice). Thanks for the info anyway everone

Hi Val..
Which Uni are you going to, as if it is either Bournemouth or Teesside then you'll probably find that they have a reasonable amount of resources for Softimage XSI.
Don't go spending before you find out what they can offer......
Save yer pennies for the beer
I'm starting my second year of the games design degree at teesside in sept ;/ has a decent library, sorry, learning resource centre :p but I remember the students just getting a simple paper tutorial book for xsi. Other modules encourage you to get you're own 3d books anyway so I was just looking. :)

Hi Val,
I don't know if you we talking about website (http://www.3dtutorial.com) or not -- however, I think there might be some confusion if you were.
Firstly, shipping to the uk is only US$10.00 (not 10.00 quid).
Secondly, regarding tax....well, I'm sorry about that but it's not something we have any control over. Since the UK is an EU member you are subject to EU VAT. It's not us that's charging you the tax, it's the European Union.
Lastly, remember, if you don't want to pay for shipping you don't have to (provided you have broadband) as we offer the products by download as well.
Cheers,
JRS
Sorry Joseph, I think there is some confusion here too. I was talking about the price of the official tutorial book from the xsi site when i posted that reply.
Any idea when the modelling tutorial by Stuart Diston-Hunter will be available?
/adds to the list of stuff to buy

The Stuart Diston-Hunter tutorials for XSI should be out within the next 3 weeks, all being well. They are currently being beta tested.

Hi Val, sorry for not getting back earlier..
Teeside Uni has all documention online within their intranet, and XSI books can be borrowed from the Oasis room as well I believe.
Books that are worth a good look though, are:
Mesmers: XSI illuminated Foundation and Character
and Coriolis Softimage XSI Character Animation f/x and design.
Plus, you'll probably find that you'll uses these a lot ->
The Ed Harris webiste, XSI base, and others easily found on the web, plus don't forget.....this site----cgtalk---.
I know it's not the same as the tutorial kit, but it's a good alternative. good luck
Cheers Joe, I'll definately pick that modelling tutorial up. :)
Thanks for the info tricky, already got the tutorials from the xsi site and I've been looking at xsibase and the edharris site! All good stuff.
Pity the xsi learning time is diluted by the fairly poor team based module, although I play do to a lot more xsi outside tutorial time. :D Thanks again
