If I export a model in fbx format, the corresponding textures are saved as tiffs. Is it possible to save them as tgas or a single tga?

Solution: When creating a Paint Layer you can select a FileType. But I've got another question:
When I create a model in 3ds max and texture it in mudbox there are anomalies like when I project an image onto a side of a model it appears on all sides even if i have mirror turned off. Kinda freaks me out, since mudbox doesnt allow very precise modelling.

It might be do to with you sharing out the UV space by placing UV "islands" on top of each other...

Let us know if you get this sorted either way
