I have been searching for a way to avoid the multiple chain ik fk switch arm solution and have heard it can be done with a single joint chain, but the one site I found that had good info on it has apparently vanished or I just fail at the internet lateley. Anyhow, I feel pretty confident I could script it if I just knew the "how it works" part of the single chain switch. I have been trying multiple configs of constraints , expressions and heiarchy setups with no luck so far. If anyone out there knows of a good tutorial, script i could dissect, or just able to give me a decent explanation of what has to happen to make it work I would be most grateful.

I'm working on maya 2k9 btw, I have seen some max info but it wasn't much help to me :sad:

one chain of joints, IK-handle on it;
setup controls so that you switch between controlling IK handle in IK way (with pole vector and reach target), and another set of controls to control IK handle in FK way (FK chain of controls, ik pole at the elbow control, reach target at the wrist control). The only limitation of this method is that you can't bend the elbow into opposite direction in FK mode. Advantages - a much better interpolation between IK and FK when switching (no more headaches with orientation interpolations).
