Hello, I had a question with regards to R&D.
I've been looking through siggraph papers for a while now. But, recently found the pixar R&D page which is insanely fascinating. I was wondering though, where exactly is this applied? Does it go into these companies' proprietary software? Most importantly, is it important for animators or even modelers to know about these developments?
Like most beginners, I'm just trying to figure what exactly I want to do (Narrowed it down to something in the arts). I'm very interested in animation and am currently taking courses at a CC where I am learning a lot (basic stuff, but I digress). I'm taking my studio art classes (paint, figure,c&c,etc.), on top of that academic and that animation class. I've been reading that it's very hard to get into the "industry" so I guess right now I'm looking into getting in on one of these independent mods.
This is where the R&D also ties in, how important is R&D, especially if you're doing something independent? Are you expected to keep up with these new findings the more independent you get? Or is this really just for big companies like pixar and ILM to worry about?
Also...any advice for all of us that come from modest means but really want to do this? Oh, and as for art school, I already got in to my top choice a couple of years ago, but no one would give me a loan, and I would think things are worse now.
I heard game mods are the best place to work your way up, but not sure. Anyone have anecdotes for how they got started (be it modeling, texturing, concept art, anything really) that does not involve art school? Thanks for any advice.
