Can i download and work on both blender 2.49b and 2.50 alpha parallel. My computer is new but it crashes with virus(svchost.exe) frequently .I format it every month. Will this may become one of the reason.

Like running them both parallel at the same time? sure... :)

As for viruses, perhaps download less stuff from random sources? :D

That sounds no Linux but Windows. LOL

In Windows first thing to do is install the TweakUI app and disable the launching of apps when some USB is inserted.
Second thing is don't enter the USB via MyPC and clicking the icon of the USB: this way you catch the virus even with the autorrun disabled as said above. The right way of enter the USB is in the windows explorer clicking in the USB that appears in the tree view: one click only on it and now to the right you see the content of the USB.
Third thing is configure Windows Explorer to show you hidden files and the extension of the files.

Instead of formatting and installing from scratch consider this (imagine you have only one hard disk):
- Create two partitions, one of around 30GB where you are going to install Windows, call it C: for example
- A second partition where you are going to store all your data. D: for example

Use Acronis to backup C: to some \Backup folder in D:
When windows crashes or you are infected you simply recover the entire C: from the backup. It will ask you several questions so make some test first (change something in windows and recover from the backup to see if it keeps your change or recover windows from the backup)

I'm not saying this will not work, partitions have saved me plenty of times, but what are you going to do when your shit is unbootable? You're gonna cry because you thought partitions where the way to go. There good, but an external hard drive that you physically disconnect from the comp after cloning/backing up is actually better...in my opinion anyway.

My current system is this: (All disks internal)
Disk 1: Two Partitions named A1 and A2
Disk 2: Two partitions named B1 and B2
Disk 3: C1, C2 and C3
Disk 4: D1 and D2

A1: Windows Vista
B1: Windows 7
C1: Ubuntu 9.10

A2: Data and backups of B1 and C1
B2: Data and backup of A1
C2: Swap for Ubuntu (5 Gb (I have 4Gb RAM))
C3: Data

Backups created with Acronis. Linux using Ext3. Windows using NTFS. Data using NTFS.

In a disk only one partition is able to boot, that is called "active" partition. When creating the partitions I mark as active the first one.

I have pointed in a paper what hard disk I must boot on. If yesterday I was in Linux and today I want go to Linux I start the computer simply and I am in Linux. But if today I want to be in Vista I go to the Bios and there I change the hard disk I want the computer boot in. Instead booting in Disk3 I will boot in Disk1 and here comes Vista. Each OS only modifies his partition. There is no conflict.

Of course having only one hard disk is a bad idea. For example making a backup from partition 1 to partition 2 in the same disk is:
A) Slower than making it to another disk (even more slow that the theorical half)
B) Not 100% sure because if the hard disk breaks you are not going to be able to restore nothing.

I also have three external disks of 1 terabyte each.

I don't remember the last time I started the computer in Windows seven.
The last time I started Vista was to decompress a rar file that I was not able to decompress with the free unrar in ubuntu (I dont want install the non free unrar even it is free for decompress).
My whole time just now is in Ubuntu 9.10 (but I recognize that Linux lacks some apps and it is difficult to use only it. For example the rar problem I had (all people create rar files when .7z format is much better in compression but it is difficult to change people ways)

D1 was with OSX Leopard. I tested it and I could see it was like Ubuntu. I didn't liked it and deleted it to use the partition as Data and perhaps in a future use this D1 for testing another OS (future Linux version probably repartitioning this D1 in D1 and D3 for swap)

i used to turned off Windows "System Restore" to prevent viruses coming back, moreover it spend large amount of spaces for backup files.I think having(at least) 2 harddrives is enough for backup. One for Clean OS (not attached to your lovely mobo) and the other one tobe sacrificed lol :p

you might install AntiVirus afterall and get it update regularly :)
i hope everything is OK

I highly recommend a program called Returnil. It is a "sandboxing" utility. It protects your system drive (C:) from any and all changes. So if a virus/worm/trojan manages to make into your system drive, any changes it makes will be undone next time you reboot. It's free for personal use.
