View Full Version : Ik spline tongue problems

I have my tongue set up with a joint chain and an ik spline handle. I created my own curve for this ik, then created clusters out of the vertices. These clusters are parented to appropriate joints in the head regions, so the tongue will deform when the head turns.

When I turn the head, the Ik handle is not moving with the head, its staying in place and this seems to be causing the tongue to twist when I turn the head. Maybe its the end effector thats staying in place; I don't know. I'll upload some screens if anyone thinks it would help.

Thanks for any input.

Here's a screen.

OK, so it turns out that the IK handle itself wasn't necessarily the problem. I'm using Maya 5 and once I disabled IK/FK blending in the Skeleton menu the handle stayed snapped to the tip joint.

I am still having problems with this spline rotating when it shouldn't. I'm at a point now where I've made a cluster of each individual vertex on spline's curve. I've then parented all of these vertices to one joint, the jaw joint. When I open the mouth(rotate in Z) the spline behaves fine. When I roate in Y the spline starts to twist. This doesn't make sense to me; when I roate that joint in Y the clusters are basically just being translated together and the spline should simply rotate around. This is also occuring when I rotate my neck joint; the spline is parented to the jaw not the neck.

This is confusing the hell out of me; hopefully someone has some troubleshooting ideas.

You r getting double deformations on your clusters and your Ik spline. Dont group the spline or its curve to anything only the clusters. The first cluster parent it to the first joint, that the Ik is asighned to. This is all I can thinck of now, tell me how do you want to move the tong around, do you also want to be abel to strech it or just leave it the way it is?

The spline and the curve aren't grouped to anything. Only the clusters are grouped to the skeleton.

I emailed Alex Alvarez of Gnomon regarding this problem. I was doing this rig by following his instructions in the Skinng 3 video. He told me this was an apparent bug in Maya 5. He was going to have a meeting with someone at Alias, and will get back to me with an answer.

I'll report back here with any info gives me.

So Alias has acknowledged that there are bugs with IK in 5.0. A bug fix will be released... no timeframe.

that's as much as I could get.

I downloaded Maya 5.0.1 last night and tried it out on my scene this morning. I seem to be having the same results I was having with Maya 5.0.

when you create the clusters from the CVs dont parent them to the joints. parent them to the curve itself. Maya should automatically create a group node above the clusters with
a little warning 'to preserve position'. This should avoid the double transformation.
