View Full Version : The Sideshow - character- Drewgilbert
drewgilbert 08-23-2003, 10:14 PM I'm not totally sure if this means I've submitted my piece with this or not. The rules don't quite adress everything. Am I allowed to add to-tweak my submission right up until the deadline?
Anyway, this is my first submission on any of these contests. Hope you all enjoy. I also submitted work for serious critique in the appropriate board, so feel free to pop over there and give me any tips or pointers you can.

Think its ment to be a wip thingy, I would love to see your sketches and so since you got a realy nice style.
What matters is the picture you provide over at cgchallenge, and you can update that one up untill the minute before closedown.
Your colouring could be better, it fits within the style of drawing but doesnt make one go "OH!" That is the only crits i guess, good work!

Alice, thanks for your comment. I've tweaked the coloring, desaturating and changing the background, and upping the saturation on the figure to make it pop some more. I'm pretty sure it needs some more work, but it's getting there. I also put side views and a front view as I'm pretty sure if it is allowed, I'm going to try to make the character for the game art challenge. I really need the 3D practice.

Hi Dude!
The Problem is that ya have to show the progress of the pic from sketch to final. These are the rules I know.
Anyway,... I like ya character.
About the rules go tt the Challengerulethread or if ya have questions there is also the suggestionsthread.

I've read through the rules three times since you posted this, and I can't find anything saying I need to show my progress. Am I missing it? I'm pretty new here, so if it's something everyone knows ahead of time and it's just an assumed rule, it really should be posted with the rules every challenge for us noobs.
Anyway, I promise you this is going to be painful, but here's my very simple process for this piece. I had an idea for an image, so I drew a couple of thumbnails, and when I say thumbnails, I mean these were the size of my thumb knuckle to the tip and two thumbs wide.

Then I just got straight to it. I drew the figure, and unfortunately for everyone else here, apparently, I inked right over the drawing.

As you can see, the shadows were put in in photoshop after being outlined in the drawing. You can even spot the thumbnail at the bottom right corner.
Then I colored the first image in the thread in photoshop. Alice's advice was good, so I rethought the coloring, and also drew three views of the character, thinking that the image along isn't really useful for someone who might want to model him, namely me.

Unfortunately, I'm not in love with the image as it stands. Functionally, it works for the purpose of possibly being useful to a game artist, but aesthetically, I can't find a way to incorporate the rotation into the image while preserving the quality of the illustration AND keep within the 800 x 800 space limit. I may have to remove the rotation entirely, as the main image looks better the bigger it is.
Does anyone else have thoughts on this? I'd really like to know if it's in my best interests in the contest to keep all the work I put in, or ditch it in favor of the one solid image?
Anyway, there you have it. I don't think it was in the rules that I do this, but as a courtesy to all of you, I really should have done it to begin with. I was just really excited and went to town really fast.
Thanks,
Great job!
I really like the character and idea! On a more positive note! Since you said you were going to try to model this, and you have a ton of extra time for the challenge, I would say model away unless you already have done so. Keep em coming!

Thanks for all the comments guys, I do appreciate it. Here's what I guess my last entry will be. It's the best way I've found to incorporate all of the things that I like about what I've put in so far. Are there specific rules for entering this piece, or am I already entered with this thread?
Anyway, comments are always appreciated. If anyone has any ideas on how I can improve on this, please don't be shy.

I just wanted to thank everyone who voted for me. THANK YOU MUCH
I really wish I had known that there was going to be voting though. After we were told that the contest was off, I took a little break from here. I didn't even get to vote for myself, or tell any of my friends to pop over here and vote for me. Man, it looks like I JUST MISSED OUT and voting ended yesterday. Awesome.
Anyway, those of you who voted for me must have really liked my entry, and I really appreciate you people for voting when you don't even know me. It's alot more gratifying than having to send people over here to vote.
Take care all,
I didn't even get to vote for myself
you cant vote for yourself! against the rules....I think:shrug:
Well, that's one handy fellow. :buttrock:
