Title: Alma Short Film
Name: Jonatan Catalan Navarrete
Country: España
Software: 3ds max, After Effects, Maxwell Render, Photoshop
Hi everyone,
This time I want to show you Alma, a short film by Rodrigo Blaas, I worked as Lighting Supervisor, also set modelling, textured and shaded the all scenes.
I was fortunate to work with a team of high quality, people like Daniel Lopez, Bolhem Bouchiba, Carlos Grangel, Sergio Pablos or Alfonso Blass did a great job of preproduction. Alfonso for example made a great work with color keys, concepts and is very helpful to me work with all great stuff.
This work was a team work, I want to say thanks to all people that worked in this shortfilm, specially to Rodrigo and Cecile :)
After over 2 years of work, we finished it and is a pleasure to me show you this video and some promotional images.
We use 3dsmax and Maxwell Render.

Made me smile! Very nice work, nice design too. Sweet kids. Ground tiles are cool too. And cloth shaders are very very nice.
Must have took forever to render. Guess you used a renderfarm?
Didn't watch the movie yet haha! Going to!

verrry nice short
the character design is amazing. I think it is a hard job to make a kid appealing but not too sweet - imho often major animation movies fail at this point.
its also great how the feeling of being inside the puppet works.
it reminded me of feeling numb, when you wake up after a nap and dont know where you are. great subtile reference to a archaic sensation within each one of us.
congratulations

Yes everything with Maxwell, and about the render times was like 1 or 3h for the backgrounds and 30min more or less for the character. :buttrock:
Must have took forever to render. Guess you used a renderfarm?
Sure, we worked with RenderRocket a very professional renderfarm :)

Thanks for feedback. Well, indeed pretty long, but result is sweet. Lighting is really nice.
Finally watched the video, and I'm also very impressed by Alma's expressions! I guess it would have been so much less good for the story line if she had not so much life on her face....
Story is kind of paradoxical for 3D animation puppeteers. =D In this Art nouveau /Gaudi's shop, on a snowy spain... Between creepy and sweet childish. Melancholy? =D
You all did great work, for a very nice little film. Congrats to you all.

Beautiful looking piece of animation. Creepy, but beautifully realized.
Thank you very much for your comments!
I´m so glad of having been part of this shortfilm :)
Jonatan did an awesome work, on modeling and textures of the shop.. but the lighting is so amazing great! :)
I had the luck to make the model of Alma and her facial rig, as well some of the animations and helped here and there to Rodrigo and Jony until the end ... wow 2 years!
Obviously it wasnt fulltime, but we spent a good number of hours on it, always we had some free minutes we came back to work a bit on the shortfilm.. so much stuff to do!
I guess Rodrigo will start answering some interviews explaining how was the process, so I let him do it :)
Cheers to the other talented artists who worked here, it was a dream team :D
Merry Christmas!

tat is totally AWESOME, can i ask u 1 question?
since your background have a lot building, how u render it? i mean hw's your computer performance?
i model a castle and use 4096pixel map, and i cant render it out, it pop out a window n say not enough memory to process, my computer is i5 processor, 4gb ram...
but still facing the rendering problem, can share some technique to make this animation?

I don't think kids above 5 should be allowed to watch it for the nature of the story line, no matter how good the animation it.

Congratulations to everyone involved! Such high quality output. Your talent and hard work is coming through beautifully in this film.
I also like the subtle nuances in the camera work, especially the ever-so-slight motion in even the static shots. The composition, depth and the colours were very cinematic. All of you truly deserve all the accolades and more!

Just wanted to pop in here and say how much I enjoyed your film. The art direction and overall tone were just exquisite.
This and French Roast were far and away my favorites from the Siggraph electronic theatre this year... and there was an awful lot of astonishingly great work on display.
Kudos, and best of luck!

Awesome short! The atention to detail is amazing (mind blowing seeing the amount of "dolls" just sitting on the back shelf and not getting much attention at all, but still incredibly detailed). The story is charming, and makes you think at the end of it.

I don't think kids above 5 should be allowed to watch it for the nature of the story line, no matter how good the animation it.
I think that's for parents to decide. My Mom is Twilight Zone junkie and didn't hide my eyes from any of it so the story and mood of this animation is especially cool for me (though if I hadn't seen the "Talking Tina" episode, the dolls here might not have been quite so terrifying). I love that it feels so playful but it's actually pretty damn dark.
Beautifully executed, guys! ¡Excelente trabajo!
Great work!!!
Fantastic animation!! Fantastic light!! Fantastic character!!... and Fantastic people!!
A pleasure to participate in the project.

Yeah, God forbid a child watches a piece of animation that actually makes them think. You don't give 5 year old's enough credit, in my opinion.
But back on topic...
This short was incredible. You sir are a fine storyteller. I love how just as she's reaching for the doll, you tell us what is going to happen. Perfect timing and excellent storytelling. And as for the animation... I'm speechless.
Brilliant stuff from every department. Congrats!

its really good but WTF at people saying its a sweet story, its so dark man and scary. I mean toys are a special thing to children and it turns them into traps for children. Really chilling story, made more so by how adorable the art style is.

great guys!!
watching this ,is so motivational for me to work and produce stuff ,but just wanna ask you a simple question .
we all have and had some times when we really want to do a work but we don't have strong motivation to do so or in many cases we start and leave the job for some reason .
how do you guys achieve to do this and finish the project ?
thanks

Is there a link to a downloadable 720P/1080P video. I'd like to archive this in my "Inspirational 3D short stories" folder.
No, no yet, the only way for see the shortfilm is from the vimeo link and only for limited time
I have a question, I hope You can answer.
How was the window material done ?
Is the edge chill just an alpha ?
Yes is a shader with some opacity channels, the snow, the dirty, nothing special

how do you guys achieve to do this and finish the project ?
Yes is a good question :) we had some days with a strong motivation and another days with less motivation :P is normal, but when you work with a team, with friends and very good artists, if you don´t have motivation, when you see the work from the other guys, you will have motivation in seconds xD

...but one "minor" failure... the left glove appears 2 times when the girl is converted in doll... and.... where is the right glove xDDDD.
All the best, and again great piece.

... the left glove appears 2 times when the girl is converted in doll... and.... where is the right glove xDDDD.
The right glove is in the dolls shelf, but girl has both gloves in the 'immersion collage'. Guess the right glove is an additional detail that the girl is within the doll. Short film has several 'hidden details' even from the beginning.
We can see for example a sad or scary face in the entrance arc
http://imagic.ddgenvivo.tv/forums/del1.png
We can read also the words peligro fatal (fatal danger) in the posters on the wall (some of them resemble to missing children posters). Can be seen also the word pozor (which means attention or warning, I think).
http://imagic.ddgenvivo.tv/forums/del2.png
Even the name of the girl alma (which means soul) and the way in which it's isolated from the rest of the other children names looks like an anticipation of what will happen later.
The design of the art nouveau storefront resemble also to the abstraction of a monster
http://imagic.ddgenvivo.tv/forums/del3.png
It's indeed an interesting character & environment design.

no, Gerardo... look at this picture... 2 left gloves.. osea, el mismo repetido

01-05-2010, 04:16 PM
You are right.. es un guante izquierdo. While it might be on purpose (the left glove that the little girl wearing could have been converted in to a toy when she was captured) a right glove would have an easier and direct reading. Anyway, there are interesting details.

Had the pleasure of seeing this at Siggraph, and though there were a couple shorts I actually enjoyed more as far as the story went, this was by far my favorite piece stylistically.
Everything about the look of this film was perfect in my eyes, from concept to modeling, texturing, and lighting. Amazing work!
I have seen a lot of times this short in the last few days. Every time I see I enjoy it a lot.
The first time you see it, is the best. The next times, you have another perspective, and this lets you to discover a lot of details all around, like the toy on the bike who wants to escape (really awesome) or how looks the front of the shop.
I remember when I saw the image of the girl looking through the glass of the door long time ago. At that moment my first impression of the movie was a soft story with a happy ending, but this story and ending have really surprised me, I love it. I remember the sound of the eyes moving at the end of the story... Great!
I like it all about the character, the face is lovely, with those big eyes and those tooths coming out of her mouth. And I really like this big wool cap!
Finally, I would want to mention the design of the toys. There are too many toys, with different styles, but I like them all. I would want to see closely all of them. All the shop is amazing, and I really like how you used the lighting inside.
And of course you did a great job with the rendering, lighting, animation...
Nothing else, just congratulations to all the team!! :applause:

Seen it, loved it.
This is a very impressive achivement, not just as an animation but on a technical level. It shows that maxwell can be used (extremely well) for animation, even if the render times are extremely high.
Very impressed, loved it.

Now, I post here maybe twice in a year, only when I see something really great :)
Amazing short! I could ramble on about the lighting, modeling, viewpoints, texture etc etc but there's nothing to say really, it was all perfect. One thing that bothered me though was the story (and yes I'm a little soft) normally with this kind of style I'd expect a cuddly and good ending, but this short sliiiightly freaked me out. Then again, same reason I never watch a lot of horror movies :D
A winner is you!

I'm usually a lurker here but this short film forced me to reply. :D
First, I would like to thank you for sharing this amazing masterpiece! It's been so long since I last saw a short film that made me stay awake the whole night because of its brilliance! I'm currently on the preprod of a personal project, a short film also. Lately, it feels as if I'm losing all sorts of motivation to proceed. This film made my desire burn a hundred times more than it did before! Thank you.
Secondly, I really love every bit of it! Art style, mood, lighting, sound, and ofcourse the story. Every detail was related to one another. Even the wall full of names where Alma wrote the title. Such incredible attention to detail! The creepy window design, the lady doll with a creepy smile, the bicycle riding doll banging itself on the door, the other dolls, the rotating platform where the dolls stood up, the twin dolls, the snowy window glass that ignites curiosity, I can go on and on with these... :D
The animation was solid! I like the subtle movements of Alma. Her facial expressions, hand gestures, cute walk with her short legs, head and hand accents and ofcourse, her very convincing childlike character. Your animation reminded me of my favorite Pixar animations mixed with Gobelins' superb shorts. Top notch indeed.
After I watched the film I was staring blankly in an open space and thinking, "How would the other children look like before they became dolls?" Especially the twin dolls with one of them having one eye blinded and the new doll standing on the rotating platform. I'm also thinking if the lady doll has a human counterpart. And also the doll on a bicycle... So much to ponder about this film! :D
Again, Thanks for sharing! :P Please make another one!

Impresionante , chavales!!
It's about everything. I'm deeply amazed on how incredibly well you've done this beautiful-like-a-precious-gem and precise-like-a-swedish-clock piece of work!! Narratively speaking it could stand by its own as a classic short film, even if it was not 3D, because of the strengh of its script writing. Alfred Hitchcock-type suspense moments are superb, like that one where you build up the tension by showing a close up of the cycling toy hitting itself repeatidly against the closed door, with Alma out of focus trying to reach the doll at the background... all wrapped-up by an incredible music score and superb sound FX. I'm going to watch it again, just in case I learn something and someday can come close to do something as good as this!
En otras palabras... a ver si se me pega algo... ;)

Indeed!
Well, even though I use to prefer happy endings, the perfect balance in this short is remarkable.
The "twilight zone" atmosphere also feels good.
Really outstanding work! Congratulations to all of the team! It must have been a great experience for all of you guys.

After all this posts, really can I add some support to this thread...?...I will try.
Honestly I did not like the idea at the first time, But yes this is true, do not ever...ever think to follow a puppet, Even if you like it, even if you see it's like you, even if you think that puppet can gave you what you seek.
Sadly what is happen to this little beautiful child and what will happen later...(I think),
Bat Who care, she is another number in a big list...or...this is another thing...?
I believe it's to be continue...
Supernatural idea...Amazing work...very powerful rendering and texturing...great concept and design.
Good Luke in your next projects.
