View Full Version : HELP: "Rotational Joint" problem...
Michael Chen 08-23-2003, 02:10 PM Hi People
I have a problem with getting "Rotational Joint" to work in 3DS MAX 5. I still can't figured out how to get it to work after reading the user reference.
Can anyone help me out... does anyone know any tutorial or site regards to this? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. KiboOst
Some info...
The character is a robot. It's arm is made out of 3 separate meshes; upper arm, elbow and lower arm. IK are already implemented.
What I am trying to do is adding a constraint on the rotation of the elbow so that the mesh in the upper and lower arm won't overlap. This way, I don't have to worry about keeping an eye on "overlapping" when coming to animate. The same principle can apply to the leg as well.
I look forward to your response or anyone out there who can help me out. I really appreciated it. :scream:

Hiya Rukuwa, i'm on Max 4, but i assume it's the same.
Select one of the arm parts, and go into the Hierarchy Panel>IK
There you can set up the rotational limits of each part, based on the local axis. You can also set up constraints in the 'Link Info' options, also in the heirarchy panel. There's probably a few other things you can do to :)
Depending on how each segment rotates, it might be a better idea to animate the arms with FK. I'm working on somthing similar at the moment.

Hi mrfandiwagon
Thanks for the reply. That was what I did but I found out that it couldn't be done for objects but only bones. Thanks again!
