You can do many interesting things with Blender's particle system. In addition to allowing meshes to emit particles (either dynamically with Emit or staticly with Hair), one particle system can react to another particle system. This effect is called Reactor. In this tutorial, I will show you how to set up the effect of a glass ball being destroyed by a speeding bullet using both an emitter and reactor particle system. I also demonstrate how to use a ground plane as a deflector object to catch the glass fragments as the ball is shattered.

Nice tutorial, gonna look at it some more later today if I get the time.

Do you add gravity to the deflector in a later stage aswell?

One more question, have you made any fluid tutorials? Been looking briefly to the fluids in Blender but had a hard time getting an even flow with fluids.... And tutorials on the net only describe the basics assigning the primitives fluid reactor and emitter.

Your comment about adding gravity to the deflector is a good one. There are a number of other effects you can add to the deflector, such as friction, damping, permeability, and whether the particles stick to the deflector, are killed, or change shape. Force fields is another area that can add to the effect. These are worth 2 or 3 tutorials just by themselves.
