it all started with me trying to fix myself a way to batch render several max scenes one after the other. using the smae machine, not on a network.
i looked at the help files and there it was the batch rendering.

being a real dummie when it comes to networking it took me couple of hours to hook it up using the microsoft loopback adaptor. but finelly it works.
its quiet amazing, i found out i can render using the "net render" option. and STILL work with another copy of max, on a athlon 1.2 !

but, i have a couple of questions,

1. how does the batch render work, does it take the same cpu cycles as a regualr 3dmax exe?
2. and if just opening another copy of max and rendering with it while working on the current copy gives the same resualts.
3. anybody tried this and have anything to add?

When you use the netrender it's my understanding that it only opens the renderer and any nessary plugins. Not the full program, which uses less system resources.

I use this trick all the time. Although the loopback thing you mentioned sounded odd. All you really need to do is start both the server and manager for MAX and then use the net render option, and essentially net render to your own machine. Then as an added benefit set the process priority on the new render to low. While it will slow down the render a bit it does allow you to keep working in MAX with almost no impact on performance.
