This is something I've been playing with for the last couple of days. The buildings inside the walls are basically every dome and castle in Italy. The wall is from Minas Tirith. And the hills are mostly Mount Sunday from different angles.

I did it mostly in Photoshop Elements. I moved into Gimp whenever I didn't have the right tool (I don't have access to the full version of photoshop right now).

I think you should start learning to paint your own images instead of (mastering copy and paste) imo :).

Looks awesome so far! I agree that painting from scratch is an important skill, but matte painting from photos is valid as well, especially for backdrops in film. Different mediums for different purposes, I believe.
