View Full Version : Displacement map help! Going insane...
DrZenith 12-18-2009, 09:04 AM Hey guys... Can anyone help me? I'm stumped on this one. My displacement maps always seem to be coming out like the one below. I export as 32 bit exr.... Only work with Obj format, and am careful about ny UVs, what am I missing?
Cheers!

Hi oglu,
well, it's kind of extreme. I'm getting maps like this both at work and at home. They don't displace correctly at all. I must be doing something wrong along the way but I can't figure it out.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this. I have had it work correectly for me before, but now I just can't get it right :(
Here's a max render of the disp map.

subD a sphere up to 1mio in mudbox...
go to map --> sculpt model using dispmap and use your .exr to displace...
if this is looking fine something is wrong with your rendersettings...
maybe your render cant read 32bit files...

Ahh ok... I usually use the best guess button, is this not recommended? Technically should I be able to set the search distance to say...500? and it would be ok!?
Thanks for the help on this one :)
Actually one more thing, as you may notice, the displacement map has a slight wireframe in it....Why is this?

You may want to use this tutorial to bake your disp map...

it goes over a lot of the issues you're having.
