hi all

i have a poly model that i'm trying to displace and i'm confused about values.

i thought 50%gray=0 displacement, white = maximum in normal direction and black = maximum in reverse normal direction....

but this appears not to be the case.

black seems to do no displacement and white full in normal direction.

so how do i do grooves for example?

i tried putting the image file through a reverse node and the whole thing balloons out except for what should be grooves. tried divide node also to minimize this but its not right.

i want most of the model to stay as i modelled it and add grooves and ridges.

confused
confused
confused

thanks

Have you tried to invert the discplacement in Photoshop??

had the same prob a few days ago... :(

maya īdidnīt want to load the bump maps...

i worked out some good bump i allready tested in cinema, their they turned out well but in maya it just didnīt work...

Adjust your alpha gain and alpha offset if you are using alpha, or color gain and color offset if you are using color to drive the displacement or bump.

thank you musterdi ! iīll try asap :)

just keen on the resaults iīll get

The idea is:

if you got your image from 0(black) to 1(white), if you gain by 2, and offset by -1; you will have your outColor span from -1 to 1.

yes thanks very much
i will try that also as soon as i get chance

Hi j00ey..
You should create this material flow/connection for your displacement map
http://geocities.com/db_2007/jooey1.txt

And the result is :
J00ey chocolado..!!... humm..yummy....

hi deathbrain
i'm sure your chocolado is lovely but when i open your link it just shows me a load of gobbledygook
tried downloading it and opening in wordpad and......... a huge load splurge of gobbledygook.
are you sure its a .txt file?
would you mind trying reposting if it is?
sample link is dead also.

on another note, i'm now back to my displacement issue and i now have 2 uv sets, one for color and one for displacement and i can't seem to connect the displacement map to the correct uv set. in the relationship editor it shows me the uv sets correctly but the other panel lists the phong and its color file but not he displacement shader with its image file.

ok fixed...
dead link on samples ? ohh what tha free site i have
Have Email ? :)

ok
nice chocolado, as i suspected
that is the flow that i've got, and i've noted misterdi's offseting advice... so now the problem i'm having is connecting the displacemt file to the correct uv set.

Ok the sample has been sent to your Email, you could remove your email address (by edit thread) ;)
2uv sets with displace ?, wait creating another sample :)

Arrg...muahaha...you're using 4.5, while i am still 4.0 lol :scream:
ok..never mind...btw,...displacement with uv's direction its a bit difficult

You could follow this good displacement with uv tutorials below :
http://www.3dlinks.com/tutorials/maya/dragon/displace.cfm
http://www.drone.org/tutorials/displacement_maps.html
http://dolinsky.fa.indiana.edu/caveart/fall01/show/nshipley/disp.html

I'll contact you later..:)

ok thanks i'll have a look there
what do you mean by the way that disp with uv direction is difficult? should i use default uv set for disp co-ords and additional sets for other [color / bump etc] as it appears that disp is just using to default set?

I mean displacement maps with uv directions it's a bit difficult, especially with polygon
I always use nurbs for displacement (with default uv's) :)

i think i've sort of half solved it by looking at all the attributes of the bump standin file that were connected to its place2dtexture node and connecting them to the displacement file.
now when i render my low poly version i get displacement in the right places, but when i smooth it and render its as if every polygon is subdivided and displaced in the middle [if that makes any sense]. i'll upload pics.

and the hi poly.........

j00ey
08-24-2003, 11:24 PM
ok... i take it back
it was the bump standin doing what i thought was displacement
:banghead:  :scream: :argh:

OOoooo....buuuuummppy..
I see it now...:D
Btw it looks fine on high-res, just adjust your bumpyness more sharpen/smaller :)

i quite liked the odd spiky one but its not what i'm trying to do unfortunately.

but i'm getting nearer now.... i've swapped my uv sets over so now the disp is using the default one [which is now correct] the color using the other. i think i will redraw the color map anyway now that i'm getting the hang of things a bit...

anyway i digress

now the displacement is almost working but i'm getting odd shards on the eyes and tongue. at first i thought this was displaced spiky polys but thinking now... its only occuring on the edge of a shape in the color file, so i think it must be the 2 uv sets fighting. so... now i need to adjust my displacement set to give over a bit more space for the other [non-displaced] faces and get them to share the one uv set.

thanks for your tips death brain

i'm getting there gradually

still some work to go on the displacement map and the color map also, but i'm getting there a but faster now....

yes looking better
nowhere near done though - thats just the head!
i'm modelling this tiny little toy of [muppet] animal with his head & body sticking out of a drum kit on wheels.
i'll post some more soon no doubt, when i hit my next problem
got to sleep now
