Is there a way that I can have an object being anti-aliased to the highest quality but still not anti-alias against the background?

You mean render using straight alpha channels? Int he render globals under render options check off premultiply

Ahh I found what I was looking for it was under Render globals but I had to check on composite.

Oh yeah I think the redubbed it premultiply in Maya 5
