Started this a few days ago. I'm not done modelling, but I wanted to see what parts of the image my lighting would wash out.
The problem is that the floor does not relflect the hotspots from outside. I have area lights in all of the windows and the background set to white.

I rendered this with mental ray, using GI and final gathering in Maya 5. Any ideas on how to get the floor to properly reflect the light would really be appreciated.

I am not an expert at modeling rendering or lighting...but I just want to point something out.

The lights (hanging from the ceiling) look to be just surfaces with a yellow colour. Well, I can see that in the floor (the yellow surface) and it is reflecting. Those lights don't seem to be emitting any light. So my suggestion would be to have a lightbulb or something in the light fixture that is glowing, so it can emit light and get a reflection off the floor. That is what the light from outside is doing. That is what it looks like anyway.

I hope this helps.

Your absolutely right. I have lights in the fixtures, but turned them off and put yellow surfaces as placeholders until I finish. The problem is with the windows. They are black in the reflection.

Oh, wow, I didn't even notice that. I have no clue, zeesh, that is odd. I am sorry.

Hi,
I'm guessing here (I work with LightWave), but I think the floor itself is fine. The problem might be with the background. Try setting it for some wild color like fire-engine red, and see if that reflects properly on the floor. If it doesn't, you might want to check the transparency settings of the glass. :D If you are still seeing black on the floor, you could also try placing a white 100% luminous dome around your building as a backdrop to reflect and see if that makes a difference. Hope that helps you out some.

Best regards,
Michael A. Barnes

Great! The reflection is finally white! Now I just have to figure out how to get the ground to reflect the over-exposed light. :applause:
