We have XStream with Cinema 4D v11.5 on a Mac, and have had nothing but problems since we started with XStream v6. What is the best setup to get XStream to work right? Max 2010/Vista? Maya/XP? What has been the most tested by E-On?

iŽm not sure if youŽre still using xstream 6 or not? but xstream 8 is much, much better.
However c4d and xstream 8 do have a few issues atm... No idea about a timeframe for a fix tho.

As for the most tested/robust xstream setup i would say that max seems to do quite well compared to other apps, but in reality iŽll say what i always say, in my opinion infinite is still the better version when comparing infinite and xstream with each other, sad but true.

Max with Vray.

Max is the best supported version, and has the largest user base.

That, of course, will mean a move to Windows. Unless you absolutely need Xstream for something specific, I would also say give Infinite a try.

Given the product history, I would suggest NOT trying the Maya/Xstream route. It's a wreck. So far, the best results I've seen were from the aforementioned Max/Xstream combination.

If stable and usable workflow is paramount, installing Win7 alongside OS-10 would be a relatively cheap way to make the software switch. Your hardware should be more than adequate already.

I'd say winxp x64, it's still the best of the win x64 os's. i'm not touching windows 7... maybe in 5 years.

Your loss my friend. The rest of us have been experiencing dramatic workflow, speed, and ease-of-use improvements all year. It's rock-solid in production and proven with the most advanced software, in both 32-bit and 64-bit, and even both simultaneously.

But waste your own time if you like! It's your time.

But for the sake of conversation, what makes XP x64 "the best of the win x64 os's"? Is it the lack of any updated driver support? The lack of security options and constant viruses/mal/ad/spyware? Do you find that spending your work-time fixing your OS somehow benefits your career?

By all means, let us know.

I wasn't aware that E-On tested Xstream at all... They certainly didn't spend much time testing the Maya plugin, but like I said, the Max plugin seems to be working well enough.

I consider myself a power user. I have a heavily modded windows xp x64 setup. I've never had a virus, no spyware or adware, and my system runs way faster then my windows 7 test system. I've yet to have a lack of driver support, and I believe microsoft is extending support until 2012.
It's not for everyone, and it does require a bit more work for the primary setup. But I don't rely on microsoft security, and I have very few services running. My network is mainly secured by hardware, so I dont have any system slowdown from software services.
I'm also using the adobe registry override for new graphics cards, and so far so good. All CS4 technology runs very well.
If windows 7 works for what you do, then there is no problem with that. Personally I dont need all the changes made from xp to 7, because I use other apps to manage my system and file browsing. I also have no need for direct x 10 or higher at the moment, but I think there is a version of direct x 10 for xp.
I also want to note that this is purely for an x64 setup, x86 windows xp pro isn't that great, x64 is actually windows server 2003.

xStream runs smoothly in C4D here using Win7 64bit, and was working as fine on my previous Vista64 machine. Has been the case since 7.5, But Vue8 is better integrated and allows for a smoother workflow.
