This was a promo spot for the Olympic Committee, produced at Nexus (www.nexusproductions.com (http://www.nexusproductions.com/)) with young hotshot directors Fx&Mat (http://fxandmat.blogspot.com/). I lead the job as well as character development and modelling the male characters alongside my mate Andrew Hickinbottom. I also textured and shaded the all of the other characters and created environments/props.

We used ZBrush to quickly flesh out concept sculpts of all the characters. This enabled us to get real-time feedback from the directors as well as being able to start from the same base mesh for each character and easily turn it into another. http://www.zbrushcentral.com/images/smilies/biggrin2.gif

Really impressive work! The character design is great and the video clip is a really wonderful package! And done with 3DS Max and After Effects, well done! Did the programs crash often? I have just been working on a 3D animation project with those tools and it can be so frustarating sometimes when the programs just crash without a warning.

The only critique I can squeeze out is that the eye lashes are little bit too simplified, I think they should look more like individual lashes (of course still maintaining the simplistic style) and less like planes with a striped texture.

Then in the animation (0.14) the foot's pose should bend more closely with the surface eventough the character has shoes because the character is basing on the surface with a lot of strength.

But otherwise everything is flawless and finalized. Thanks for sharing!

Really good work. Nice to see equal attention paid to all aspects, with strong character and environment designs, consistently good texturing, shading and lighting, and solid animation.

reads really really well, very appealing designs that remind me very much of Pixar's work.
Any consideration of producing some resin statuettes ? I'd buy 'em all!

Watching the clip I'm curious to know if your client ever expressed any concern for the foot bracing up against the 'clocktower' and turning it into the Leaning Clocktower of Pisa ?

Great job!!! I really liked the concept and thought the animation was really well done. Could you possibly give a time frame you guys had for the project, how many people you had working on it and any other info that would fall into that category. Good job!!!

I saw it a while back, and have to see that I "enjoyed" watching it ... so I guess it delivered a good message ... :)

I liked also the stylized characters and amazing details on environments ... the lighting and shading is stunning and full of life colors ... just amazing :D

nice work everyone ... hope to see more from you soon :)

Thanks for all the comments guys, appreciated. Thanks for the Plug Matt, you are a legend.

All programs crash I guess, depends how far you push it. At Nexus we have a pretty robust pipeline in place along with a whole 64bit render farm, so crashing for no real reason is rare, that's not to say that we don't use every meg of memory that is available! After Effects is so slow but hopefully the next one will be 64bit. Nexus have just bought a load of Nuke seats, so ANY GOOD NUKE ARTISTS PLEASE APPLY!!!

Reminds you of Pixar's work...what a compliment, but I must humbly disagree, it's not nearly that good ;) About the client and the clock tower, the answer is YES. The 'thing' that the foot is pushing against was decided at the last minute after starting out as Big Ben, then it was a lighthouse, then a wind mill...and then back to a more generic 'clock tower', it might as well be Pisa.

Great job!!! I really liked the concept and thought the animation was really well done. Could you possibly give a time frame you guys had for the project, how many people you had working on it and any other info that would fall into that category. Good job!!!

Time frame was about 12 weeks, from planning/design to complete movie. From the top of my head on this job we had one lead, two character modeller/texture artists, 2 riggers, 2 environment modeller/texture artists, 2 FX/lighting guys, 2 animators and 2 compers. There were actually less crew than what I just listed as most of these guys were amazing all-rounders so everyone got involved in all areas.

Nice one Dave - was a really cool project to work on and FX & Matt were probably the best 'bosses' ive worked with. I should get my pics up over the weekend, not that they'll be that much different to these.

Until next time!

The look of the characters seems pretty similar, which I don't think is a bad thing. Also, North America/Hockey reminds me of Tony Hawk. I can't imagine these likenesses are by accident, so nice job evoking real people with such stylization.

hey man. really nice. i'd be interested in your lighting and vray settings because im making something thats a similar style, also using vray and it'd be a great help :)

The kind of graphic look is simply a product of the lighting and comp work. The Vray settings were all very basic, with sss2 skin and soft vray lights, but nothing special. A good idea was to take a Vray Diffuse Element and put it above the beauty layer at about 15%, this lightened all the shadows and flattened it in a toony style but without taking out all of the subtle shading.

We started the job back in May and the turnaround for this job was very quick (as usual) so having a solid idea of what the characters were going to look like as early as possible was key to creating them quickly. The directors had some sketches and even a physical sculpt of each hero character (which was a real luxury). The next stage was to start with a base mesh and use ZB to create a concept sculpt. This was a very important stage as we could get real time feedback from the directors, "move that up, fatten the cheeks, widen the neck, lower the eyes...etc etc". We then re-topologised the meshes. http://www.zbrushcentral.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Nice consistant design there guys! :D

My professional crit: I really liked the idea of the movie, especially the end although I thought the animation let it down a bit. I also think on the characters the placement of some of the stylised hard edges (especially just above the men's crotchs and the women's breasts) seem weird and anatomically incorrect. Saying that, I really like the different charactured faces, and I reckon they're right on the money!

Good work guys!

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone.

By the way, in a bid to expand our pool of freelance talent Nexus are looking for great artists based in London. Even though we are a 3DS Max studio, we are also hunting for good Maya modellers too. We have some great projects coming up in the New year too. I really love the style and the quality is superb. Also I like how you flaunted the hidden message of the Olympics. The Olympic Games and it's athletes will destroy the little man and his community to feed their monstrous egos all under the guise of " uniting the world to watch them compete." Looks like someone wasn't really loved by their parents unless they were the best at their chosen sport.

Countries taxes increase to help facilitate the games but after they go the host cities usually have to declare bankruptcy shortly there after. http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/02/do-olympic-host-cities-ever-win/ Yay lets Mortgage our futures all so we can watch some jackass pothead swim really fast and pimp rosettastone.

Congrats to you, Andy H and the rest of the Nexus team for producing a solid piece of animation. I am not keen on photo-realistic CG humans (although usually technically brilliant) this is what CG should be used for, beautifully styled and imaginative comic/cartoon characters.
