ok... hi...:) im rendering this preety heavy scene and if i render it in my comp it'll never finish..

if u want to skip the explanation please do so... there is a summary at the end w the concrete question but for the sake of clarifying any misunderstanding of what im trying to achieve im explaing it here:

its a total of 970 frames, the scene has no textures and then the textures get washed on... anyway... the first part of the scene is 250 frames it uses RD (flat shaded) thus i use raytracing "only shadows". at production quality and 7 samples of shadows

the second (and the heaviest) is 686 frames... but this one not only uses RD w textures but it also has reflections (no refractions). anyway... both parts take too long to render if i render them all in one layer .. so to narrow that time down im doing 2 things.. first im gonna use about 30 to 60 computers from college to render as fast as possible. and second im rendering in layers. , which brings me to the question.

(one frame in my comp takes 1hour 30 min) so icant render it all in one comp.. but one layer renders in 15 minutes

so im thinking that if i render in layers its got to work BUT... if i do...

1. do the shadows from one layer affect the other layers?...
i think not so i dunno if i actually have to make like a separate scene w the whole scene in 1 layer and then do a shadow pass...

or can i do a global pass per layer that has shadows?... but if i do wouldnt that only make a shadow pass for the objecs in layer 1, and then another shadow pass for the objects in layer 2?
... but not a shadow pass for both layer 1 and 2 interacting?..

2. for the reflections... same thing but w reflections.... any ideas on what to do?...cause i know that if i made the objects non renderable or in another layer they simply wont affect the objects that i need to reflect...

3 . should i go down to inmtermediate quality ... and still look the same on tv?... im not certain on this one.. so any help ill appreciate

(am i thinking the right way?.. opr am i completely off?) any help i would appreciate
i dunno if that was toooooo complex to read... forgive me if it was.. i just am trying to explain myself with as much information as i can give... so ill try to narrow it down a bit more just in case

do render layers affect only the shadow and reflectivity of the objects in that layer... or do the objects in say... layer 1 relfect and cast/receive shadows from the object in layer 2?...

thanks for any replies... again sorry for the complexitty of the phrasing for the question..

sincerely

ok, thats a lot but i will try.

1. the render layers don't affect each other with shadows and refl. there are several ways, but heres my one.

i usually use the "use background shader". apply this to a surface which receives the shadows (be aware and set the reflectivity and specular color of the shader to your needs). then you can do render the passes (color, shadow). it's a bit complicated to seperate but you will find your way :)

2. look to point 1 :bounce:
3. if you are sure it will only be shown on tv, then interm. qual. can do this for you. i would take the time and render it higher qual. because you never know for what do you need this.

if you have more questions you can write me an email (i will pm you my one).
