Hi,

I'm trying to make my city (Florianopolis, SC - Brazil) in Vue 7.

And I'm trying to find DEM files of my city, so that I could only load them in Vue and Vue would do the rest.

But I'm having a hard time finding this king of file of my city... I have found of most places in the world but not mine.

Someone know a site that it would have a chance of having this file... or a elevation map in grayscale?

thank for your help!

Hi

I've run into the same problem, but unfortunately I haven't found what I want either. I was trying to find a DEM of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, but I couldn't find anything that worked. However, in my search I found this site. It's a collection of sites that are for terrain modelling and research. It's better than nothing.

Hi, thank you for the information!!
I'll be looking in to it!

Actually I found something yesterday after a long search... but it was not accurate for my city.
And I just typed your place and there was 4 matches..
I just don't know if it's accurate.. but you can try:

http://edcsns17.cr.usgs.gov/EarthExplorer/

you have to register to downlaod..
then you have to do:
1. select dataset => digital elevation SRTM..
2.place the name of your place..
3. hitsearch..

it will find 4 matches... then download them.. but I was not able to export this ".bil" file or the other one ".d1t" (I think) to Vue, so I have used this program:
http://fwtools.maptools.org/
to export to tiff and load it to vue.. but I had no luck .. the geography was 30% accurate.. and the elevation was 2% hahaha..
but I'm still searching!!!

thank you.. and hope this helps!

Hi,

I had the same issue a few months ago, I found an awesome tutorial (link below) on how to convert DEM's into 16bit Tiff images for use in MAYA... if you follow the tutorial through until you create and stitch the DEM's into one 16bit tiff file, you can just open the 16bit Tiff in the Vue terrain editor.

Just make sure you set the appropriate resolusion for the image size of the 16bit image and reset the terrain so it is flat and not trying to add any additional information to the 16bit image.

The Tutorial also goes through the process of where to download FREE DEM's of America at 10m and 30m resolutions.

Hope this helps you out and if you have any questions about my process, please don't hesitate to conatact me.

Thanks Fabricio Morato for your post. I checked out the USGS and got it working. I don't think I could view everything on the site with Google Chrome, which was part of my problem before. It's fine with Internet Explorer. I haven't downloaded a file yet, though it's good to have found what I need. I will pursue this after the New Year, and let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

I know it's been awhile since this discussion began, but I recently resumed the idea that I had before New Year. I have just spent several hours trying to find a programs that can convert BIL and DTED files (from the USGS site) into DEM or some common picture format. I found one that looked promising called ArcEditor, but you have to order a 60-day trial. Apparently the program starts at $7000! Yeah, right! However, I did find a program called GISConverter (http://www.sharewareconnection.com/total-gis-converter.htm) that converts BIL files into TIF, JPEG, BMP, or PNG. The only problem is it's the free version, which splits up the original file into several smaller ones. I guess you have to reassemble it in Photoshop, or whatever picture editor you use. But it is easier to use than OpenEV. I used a TIF to create my Vue landscape and the results are quite good. Anyway, I hope this helps if you're still interested. :)

This also looks like an interesting tool in aiding in a dem -> 3d program pipeline....

I have to yet had a chance to try it out, but it sure looks promising.
