View Full Version : Cutout_Opacity with MIA_material

Hello,
I'm using the Mia material for an architectural scene in Maya 2009. I want to create a 'screen like surface' with a pattern of holes in it. See example projects here:
http://www.ten-arquitectos.com/ten_main.asp?lang=en

I'm using a simple dot matrix pattern as a black and white jpg and attaching the file to the "overall Bump" slot of the mia material. But when I render it and adjusted the levels of the CutOut_Opacity from 1 to .5 the entire surface's opacity is affected rather than simply the black or white spots. In short, nothing gets cut_out.

My goal is have a perforated surface that I can use to shoot interior and exterior renders with light and shadow passing through the surface holes. I can model the surface with holes but I want to keep a low poly count, and I want to change the geometric pattern by simply changing the mapped image.

thanks a lot for any help,

joe

Could you provide a screenshot of the hypershade?

Can't you connect the texture as a map in CutOut_Opacity? (you know to map white as opacity 1, and black to opacity 0, making doubly sure that you check "Alpha is Luminance" under Color Balance)

Trauco is correct; you need to connect the map you're using to "Cutout Opacity", not just to the bump slot. Also, be sure that "Alpha is Luminance" is checked in your File node.
