View Full Version : Reverse foot...again!

I've been trolling the forum trying to pick up info on the infamous reverse foot set up. I've been trying to figure it out myself but haven't gotten it to work. It looks very simple on the surface, but I think my hierarchy is wrong and I'm missing some nulls or something.

Is it possible for someone here to post maybe one leg and foot set up in a .c4d file using this method? I really need to bend the toes when my character walks and it just ain't working.

I based the legs on Wes Ware's tut, but I can't get the foot to bend at the toes.

Most set ups I've seen just use one foor bone and one toe bone, but no multiple toes. Most of the characters have some sort of shoe, I suppose, so there's no need for multiple bones.

Well, I appreciate any enlightening on the matter...right now it's making me nuts.

Hey Bobzilla,

If you send me your e-mail i will send you a copy of my latest reverse foot setup. I am the one who posted the reverse foot at the "learning to walk" thread.

The old one, is the one that would come through in a pinch. Although it had its' limitations. If the foot was flat on the ground you can't just roll the toe to point upward by itself.

Although you could control it so that someone could roll up on the ball of their foot. It also had a pivot at the heel and toe.

the new one I have made is a little more exotic. The foot bones exist outside of the hierarchy to prevent any residual jitter that sometimes get's transferred to the feet through the legs. A minor problem although I have come up with a major work around for it.

I guess i am what they called me on an earlier post, "Fiddly".

I am also writing an extensive tutorial on rigging and hope to post that soon.

Hi bobzilla,

Is this for your dino ? Maybe this helps. I would build
Wes' rig and put some extra bones for the toes
under the main toe bone. I would use this main toe
bone for the rolling and for the toes action I would use
Posemixer. If I am right Kai uses also Posemixer for
the toes action.

Hey bobtronic:

Yes, it is for my dino!

That's basically what I did. I have a few poses in a PoseMixer object (toes spread, toes together, curl up, curl down, etc.) but I can't seem to get that roll off the toes. There's no real "ball" on the dino foot, and it looks more natural if the toes bend. I wish I could rotate the heel, foot, and first part of the toes (closest to the foot), and leave the front part of the toes flat, that way the knee bends also, and I don't hve to move 3 or 4 different pieces just to get that foot to push off. I have to do a lot of counter rotating and it doesn't look natural.

Could make a screenshot of your rig and hierachy?
Maybe someone has then an idea to solve your
problem.

You work for ages on this model - I would like to
see it in action sometime :)

Until posemixer gets a bit of a redesign, I won't touch it with a 50 foot pole if I don't have to. No posemixer in my rig whatsoever, otherwise you'd need mocca for my rig and you don't have to have mocca, though it sure saves time and makes life easier for sure

So no Posemixer in your rig, Kai ? I am getting even more
curious, how your rig will look :) As for MOCCA, I would spend
the money mainly for Claude Bonet and the bonetool.
They are a blessing for every CA (I hate rigging in 6.3).
My currently rig for my doll character is basically the one
of Wes' tutorial and FK for the arms.

cheers, Bob

Yes bone tool more then anything else is must in my book. CB is definitely a lot easier, and Cappucino makes test animations and such a lot easier too.

so even a hard IK rig sure can get a lot of use out of mocca.

Also, my rig can be built using SIK, but the two will perform fairly different.

Anyways, I work two evenings this week but am pretty much free lets see what I can get done.
