Here's a list of "qualified" hardware that's officially supported by Alias:

I have a Geforce4 Ti4200 128 DDR ram. It's not officially qualified for Maya by Alias. But it performs quite nice with maya. I bought this card mainly because I'm only a 15 year old student, who can't really afford a thousand dollar video card. Plus, I heard that a quadro card can actually perform worse in games :) But if you're going to be working in maya alot, and need that extra viewport speed and what not, I'd say a card from the Quadro family will quite suffice.
